“He doesn’t? I thought everyone out and about did!”

Clay blows out a breath. “I might’ve taken his gun from him.”

“That is not your call,” I snap. “If that Rebel Brother had a gun on him—”

“He did, but Chester almost killed him despite it.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“There’s more.”

“More bad news?”

“The police have arrived.”

I rub the back of my neck. “I don’t have time for their nonsense. Handle it.”

“I will try, but they might insist on talking to you.”

I nod, already figuring that to be the case.

Clay hesitates. “I am sorry about taking his gun from him without asking you first.”

“It sounds like you made the right choice, but I do not like this.”

“I will not go against your orders again.”

“Not so much that. All of it. Why now? Why come for us now? We have been at odds from time to time before, but this…”

“They seem to want us all dead.”

“We need to learn why. What’s changed?”

“I do not know. I’ll go and talk to the police officer now.”

I wave him off and whip out my phone. “Chester,” I bark as soon as he answers.

“I’m sorry, Boss.”

“You didn’t even tell me you were dating anyone,” I snap.

“I’m sorry. I just… We’ve been together for three months.”

“And she doesn’t know what you are?”

“No, Boss. I’m not that stupid.”

“And it’s serious?”

He says nothing.

“It had better be fucking serious if you lost it on one of those fuckers.”

“It’s as serious as it can be for being only three months.”

“Then you take her and get out of here. I’ll call you when it’s all over and you two can return.”

“Are you sure? You need every body—”
