“He… I detailed his car. Gave it an amazing paint job, if I do say so myself, and he paid promptly, was so very nice, bought me muffins and cookies… He asked me out, and we had dinner together tonight.”

Stacy groans. “Do not tell me that you were at his place when it got shot up.”

I say nothing.

“Girl! Tell me you weren’t there!”

“You want me to lie to you?”

“Fuck. You need to get your ass away from him. I don’t care how nice he was, how great the date went…”

“Oh, trust me. Getting shot at in the middle of sex—”

“You slept with him?” she shrieks.

I fall silent again. Shit. I hadn’t meant to mention that.

“Hell, he must’ve impressed you if you went all the way,” she says.

“Don’t worry. It doesn’t matter. It’s over between us before it really had a chance to turn into anything serious. I only met him twice. When he came over and hired me and then, well, he came back to pay me the rest of the payment up-front, and then today, when he picked up his bike and—”

“And picked you up after dinner. Just please, promise me that your pussy isn’t going to make you do anything stupid.”

“Do you talk to everyone like that or just me?”

“Just you and you know that. I can be very professional when I have to be, but you’re scaring me. This war between them is serious, and we honestly don’t know how to handle it. Stuff like this, it’s terrifying all the way around.”

“I’m sure it is. I don’t want anything to happen to you either.”

“I’ll be careful. Any chance you want to come over? We can watch something or just hang out.”

“No, thanks but no,” I say. “I’ll be fine. I’m back at Killer Wheels, and I might get some work done or just go home. Not sure yet, but I’ll be fine.”

“Alec, Alec, Alec,” she murmurs. “I’m trying to think if there’s anything else I know about him, but I can’t think. You were there when there was a gun fired—”

“More than one shot.”

“Shit.”

“I’m fine!”

“I think I’m going to have a heart attack,” she says.

“Is your work always so interesting?”

“No, actually. Not until this whole mess started. I wouldn’t recommend it at all and would wholeheartedly return for a refund if I could.”

I laugh.

“It wasn’t that funny.”

“I know, but I also just remembered that Alec got us dessert to go. He can have the cannolis.”

“Cannolis? You love them.”

“I do.”

“And I’ll buy you as many as you want,” she says.
