Her dark hair is wild and curly around her head. There’s a bruise and blood on the side of her forehead that makes me wince.
Who the hell did this to her?
I lean closer to her and breathe a sigh of relief when I see that she’s still breathing.
“I don’t know exactly. I was passing by this alley and this woman came stumbling out. She was confused and she touched her head where it was bleeding. Then she just crumpled to the ground. Do you think she was…assaulted?” He asks, his words tripping over themselves.
Shit, I hope not. If I find out that someone touched my woman I’m gonna kill them with my bare hands.
Wait, what? She’s not my woman. I haven’t even met her. She’s a victim that I need to take care of, that’s all.
I check her throat for injuries and wince when I see that she’s covered in bruises, scrapes and scratches. I lift her hands and groan when I see that her fingernails are broken and there’s blood underneath her nails.
She put up a helluva fight, whoever she is.
She’s mine. Those two words whisper through my head over and over.
I push the annoying mantra down.
“Do you know who she is?” I ask him.
He shakes his head sadly. “No, I’m sorry. And she didn’t have a purse or wallet or anything.”
I look around at the crowd even while I check her vitals and probe her various injuries carefully.
“Anybody else know who she is?”
Nobody answers and I groan. “So for now she’s a Jane Doe. Did anyone call the cops?”
A detective steps out of the shadows. “I’m supposed to take a report at the hospital if she wakes up. We’ve already checked the scene and the rest of the guys are down the alley trying to figure out where she was originally. We’re thinking she was attacked somewhere else and then dumped here.”
Nodding, I jerk when her eyelashes begin to flutter and then the most beautiful sapphire eyes I’ve ever seen open, staring right into mine.
“Who are you?” she asks softly, her voice shaky and light.
“I’m Judd. I’m a paramedic. Do you know where you are?”
She glances around and grimaces when her head moves in my hands. “Steady on, honey. Lie still. Just look around slowly.”
She studies the area around us and the people gathered around her. “I’m still in Ridge City, right?”
Smiling, I hold her head and check it for bumps. I find several. “Do you know what happened to you and how you ended up right here?”
She scrunches up her tiny nose and her full lips purse in concentration. “Nope. I don’t know how I got here. I remember….”
She jerks and her eyes widen then narrow. She grabs the front of her shirt where it’s gaping open. I’ve been trying not to stare at the creamy expanse of her chest exposed to me. Now that she’s grabbing it, my dick hardens into a steel rod.
“You remember something?” I ask.
“No,” she says and I want to shake the hell out of her. She’s lying.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” Her eyelashes lower to cover her expressive gaze. “I have a bit of a headache.”
I nod to Jess and she grabs the bed out of the back. She stops it by us and the woman pales. “I don’t want to go to the hospital.”
I pat her soft shoulder, trying not to notice the torn lace of her bra. One of the cups is barely hanging on and I want to pull her shirt closed and tell her that she needs to be more careful. These men shouldn’t be seeing what’s mine.
