“It was a joke, Cal. Take the number. She’s a nice girl.”
“Turn around.”
I guess I’m not getting off that easy. I inhale a sharp breath then turn to face him. The memory of what he can do to my body makes my stomach drop.
“Is that what you think of me?” he repeats, his blue eyes peering into my soul, compelling me to tell the truth.
“I don’t really know what to think of you.”
His teeth clench, creating a visible twitch in his jaw, and his eyes become distant. “I see,” he says, “You should be going. I wouldn’t want you to be late.”
I hold out the paper with the phone number on it, but he refuses to accept it.
“She’s watching us. Just take it. Please. You can throw it away later. You don’t always have to be such an asshole, you know” I tell him, pleading with my eyes for him to at least consider it.
He sighs and takes the paper, shoving it into his pocket. No way in hell did I ever think he would actually listen to me. One corner of his mouth turns up in the beginnings of a smile when I grin at him in appreciation.
“See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
“Goodbye, Makenna,” he says, the smile now a smirk.
“See ya later... Caligator,” I say, laughing at myself and beaming inside at the breakthrough we just had.
I made Cal Suppato smile.
He rolls his eyes and opens the door to his father’s room, disappearing from my view as I walk away proud.
