Page 67 of Sin with Me

Brynn nudges her with an elbow, causing some of her drink to spill over the top of her cup.

Ryleigh narrows her eyes. “Hey!”

Brynn shoots Ryleigh a nasty glare then looks at me.

I can’t blame Brynn for her reaction. I have been kind of a ticking time bomb over the past two years. It’s gotten much better over the past several months, but there once was a time when the mere mention of Reid’s name was known to cause a mental meltdown.

“What she means is, maybe your expectations are too high. Jaxon is top shelf. You should drink that shit while you can. Or some thirsty bitch is gonna come by and steal a taste.”

“You’re comparing him to alcohol?” I ask.

She shrugs and raises her clear, plastic cup in the air. “Don’t judge me.”

“Makenna Taylor?” a male voice roars from somewhere behind me.

I turn a little too quickly, causing me to lose my footing. Able hands hold me steady, and a smile I know all too well greets me when I look up.

“Carter?”

His eyes greedily scan my body before he replies. “Makenna Taylor, all grown up. Damn.”

Brynn and Ryleigh watch from the sidelines as Carter and I catch up on the past seven years. He offers his condolences while I try not to let the conversation linger on the topic of Reid longer than necessary.

“Okay, great catching up. Take care,” Brynn says as she tugs at my elbow.

Carter grabs my other arm and holds me in place. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to show you something.”

“Ten bucks says it’s his penis,” Brynn mumbles, nearly causing me to spit out the drink I just took.

I pull my arm from her grasp and narrow my eyes at her. Then I look back at Carter. “Sure. If you promise to make it quick. We were just about to leave.”

Seeing Carter Boyd takes me back to a time and place I wish I could drop anchor and never leave. A time when Reid was the cat and I was the mouse. And the chase was one of the most thrilling and fantastic experiences of my life. I want to stay here just a little while longer.

As it turns out, I owe Brynn ten dollars. Some things never change. Carter takes me to his car and hands me his business card, informing me if I ever needed anything, to please call. Then he offers to take me home. Reid would come back from the grave to kick both our asses if I ever went home with Carter Boyd. So, I politely take the card, and as soon as he’s out of sight, throw it in the nearest trash can.
