“I can’t even imagine what that’s like. I’m glad you have someone you can count on.”

Nate returns to the table with a full smile, dimples and all.

“Great news.” He sits down. “It seems like the superintendent loved what she observed. They need to make a final decision, but it looks promising that this program will be incorporated throughout the county.”

“That’s amazing. Congrats.” I squeeze his arm.

“Thanks.”

“It’s wonderful news,” Brooke says. “Proud of you, little bro.” She grins.

“I don’t get it.” Walker shakes his head.

“I did a good job at work, and that lady liked it. Other schools are going to have a deputy working with them.”

“But you’re not leaving my school, right?” He frowns.

“I don’t think so, but things change,” Nate answers honestly.

I know this part of being a deputy wasn’t his ideal situation, but he seems to be fully involved in the program.

After dinner, Nate takes me home. Standing by my door, he squeezes my hip and leans down to kiss me.

“Thanks for coming to dinner tonight.”

“I had fun.”

“I’m glad. My sister and Walker are the only family I have.” He smiles sadly.

“You’ve got friends here now. And me.” I cup his cheek. He closes his eyes and nods, moving his head to kiss my palm.

“Want to come in?”

“Always.”

We walk into my apartment, closing the door behind us. I lean up on my toes, kissing Nate. His arms wrap around me, and a sense of home fills me. He’s all I want, all I need. He’s my forever.

“I’m going to marry you someday.” He breaks away from the kiss, his breath a whisper against my lips.

“I can’t wait.” I smile.
