Davin’s cheeks flush red at her smile, and I want to rip out his eyes for even looking at her.

Noticing my glare, he puts his hands out again. “Calm yourself. I’m not making eyes at your mate, Dragon King. I have a mate of my own, remember?” He clears his throat and shifts his gaze back to Freyja. “Which reminds me… Aurdyn was telling me about you, and it sounds like you and my Elsie would get along well. I thought we might have you over for a dinner when this is all over.”

“We’d be delighted,” Freyja says and I growl low in my throat. She elbows me, and gives me a pursed lip look. “Wouldn’t we, Aurdyn?”

I huff out a frustrated breath and make sure to bare my fangs when I smile. “Of course.”

“You said you were already moving the children to safety,” Freyja changes the subject as she addresses Davin. “Will you be able to get them all away in time?”

“That is my hope,” he says.

She turns to me. “What if we sent some of our warriors to help? Surely they would be able to get all the children out in time, then.”

My mate has such a tender heart. “Of course.” I turn to one of the guards behind me. “Assemble twenty of our warriors to go to Arganth and help relocate the Dwarf children to safety.”

“Yes, my King.” He bows low and then leaves to relay my order.

Davin gapes at me in disbelief, but I ignore him as Freyja stretches up on her toes and wraps her arms around my neck. She presses her lips to mine in a tender kiss.

“Seven hells,” King Davin mutters, and I growl at the interruption as he looks at Freyja. “You’ve managed to thaw the ice-cold heart of a Dragon.”

“Leave us,” I growl. “Before I change my mind and set fire to your hair.”

“Just my hair?” He grins, and winks at me again, and I narrow my eyes. “You are a changed Dragon indeed, King Aurdyn.”

When the Dwarvesare finished resealing the tunnel, Freyja and I return to our rooms. We barely make it inside the door before I push her against the wall and claim her mouth in a searing kiss.

She wraps her arms around my neck and her legs around my waist as I breathe between kisses. “I have longed for you all day, my T’kara.”

Desperate to be inside her, I quickly remove her boots and leggings. I push her tunic dress up around her waist and then line myself up with her entrance.

She moans as I sink deep into her warm, wet heat, reveling in the tight clasp of her around my length. Supporting her backside with one hand, I wrap my wings around her to cushion her against the wall as I tangle my free hand in her long silken hair, gripping it with my fingers and tilting her head up to mine.

I stare deep into her half-lidded eyes as I thrust up into her. A deep growl vibrates in my chest as she breathes my name out like a prayer.

She holds tightly to me, and I quicken my pace as I move deep inside her. A tingling sensation begins in my lower back as my knot expands, locking us together. Her channel ripples around my length before clamping down hard. She cries out my name and a loud roar rips from my throat as I erupt deep inside her, filling her with my seed.

We’re still knotted together as she relaxes against me, and I carefully carry her to the bed and lay us both down beneath the furs.

As she lies in my arms, I gently nuzzle her hair, breathing in her lovely scent. I want so much for her to stay here, where she is safe, but I doubt she will agree. Still… I must try.

“Freyja?” I whisper and she opens her eyes and gives me a sleepy smile.

“Yes, my Dragon?”

I arch a brow. “Your Dragon?”

She grins. “Yes, you wonderful, arrogant, Dragon king.” She presses her lips to my own and whispers against them. “You are mine.”

I cannot deny how much her words please me to no end. A low growl rumbles in my chest at her claiming of me, and I have to have her again. But first…

“I want you to stay here.”

Her expression falls. “No. My place is by your side, Aurdyn. I will not be left behind.”

“Freyja, please. I—”

“I was a shield-maiden of Ruhaen before I became your wife. I am a warrior in my own right,” she states firmly. “And I believe the gods gifted me fire magic for a reason, and it was not to stay behind while you fight.” She frowns. “My parents left me behind and they never returned, Aurdyn. I will not be left again. I want to fight by your side and protect you.” Fire burns in her eyes. “Is that not my right as your queen? If I were a Dragon, it would not even be a discussion. It would be understood that—”
