My little bean shifts in my stomach and I try not to smile at the feel of her. “I do too, it’s one of my favorite shows.”

She smiles at me, the first genuine smile but it’s gone in a split second. “I do love the men on there.”

“There are some good-looking police officers for sure,” I agree with her.

She gives me a funny look. “No, I like the serial killers.”

Oh fuck.

I laugh. “Oh okay.” I pretend that I’m not freaking slightly that she is fantasizing serial killers who tend to murder women.

“I tried to be taken by a serial killer once, but that didn’t turn out how I expected. But that’s okay, it was a trial run for him.” She sighs, I swear you can see the hearts in her eyes talking about them.

She looks at me full on. “How did you do it?” she asks.

I give her a confused look, not sure what she is meaning. “What do you mean?” She laughs. “How did you get a serial killer to be obsessed with you like that?”

All of the air leaves my body and vomit crawls up my throat. I look at her with a whole new light and it’s one that is screaming, DANGER!

The door to my office building opens. Walker and Darren walk in looking around frantically until their eyes land on me.

I breathe fully since the first time I saw her. Opal, AKA Renee, is staring at the TV, humming like she didn’t just drop a huge bomb on me.

Erin walks out of my back office where I store all my paperwork, holding up the phone for me. “I will be right back,” I tell Opal/Renee and hurry to take the phone. I wave the guys to follow me into the room putting it on speaker phone, the door halfway shut so she can’t hear.

“Hello, this is Summer.”

“This is Opal’s brother.” He sounds like he has been crying, his voice is weird.

“Is everything okay?” I ask him.

His voice hitches when he speaks. “You mean you don’t know?”

I look at the guys and Erin confused. “I don’t know what?” I ask cautiously.

He sniffs. “I just had my parents’ funeral. Opal killed them because she didn’t want to be committed to the hospital. After she ran away, she lost her mind.”

We all turn to look out to the waiting room to Opal, who is no longer there.

Oh fuck.

CHAPTER 17

SUMMER

“Why are you calling me then?” he asks me. We are silent, staring out the door. Erin grabs ahold of my arm tightly, I can feel her shaking, hell that could be me.

Darren goes to close to the door when it’s wrenched open with Opal standing right in the door looking at us.

“Yes, tell him Summer why you are calling him,” she mocks me, holding something in her hand. It’s a gun.

The guys move in front of us. “Aww isn’t this cute, they are going to protect her,” she snarls at them. She begins to pace the room, back and forth, pulling at her hair and then randomly stops like she is talking to herself.

Her eyes glare at me, her lips thin. “What do you have that I don’t!” she screams, lifting her arm and firing a bullet into the ceiling.

I cover Erin’s mouth from screaming, any little thing can set her off. I end the phone call so her brother doesn’t speak and make it worse, “How can he love you like that and not me! I even changed my hair color for him, but he went after you again.” She curls her lip at me in disgust.

I almost fall to the floor at her meaning as I connect the dots. She loves serial killers, changed her looks to look like me. “I followed you to the diner hoping that I could see what I can change to make me more like you. I sent him pictures, I begged him in jail to come find me, I gave him my address! NOTHING!” She picks up the table flinging it over onto the ground in front of us.
