“We’ll take good care of each other,” Devyn said. “And I’m cashing that check.”
Duke laughed as he backed toward the side of the house. “I figured you would. Name one of your rescue animals after me, will ya?”
“We just got a donkey with a broken tail. I think Duke is a good name for a jackass,” Devyn teased.
He shook his head before he disappeared around the corner. “Good luck, Maxwell. You’re going to need a lot of it if you want to survive my sister.”
“Is that true?” Devyn slid her hands up my chest and clasped them behind my neck. “Do you think you need a lot of luck to survive me?”
“I’ve already got luck on my side.” I nuzzled my nose against her neck. Her scent—a mixture of clean laundry and Texas sunshine—was the most potent aphrodisiac I’d ever experienced in my life. “It’s what led me back to you.”
“You think all that luck is going to help you get lucky?” She slid her foot between mine and pressed her hips against the bulge behind my zipper.
“Nah. I think your insatiable sex drive is going to help me with that.” I slanted my mouth over hers and gave her a preview of what I had planned for later that night. After we ate dinner as a family in her tiny, cozy kitchen. After we read Graham a bedtime story together and tucked him in.
“I love you, Henry Maxwell.”
“I love you, too.” And I’d do whatever it would take to spend the rest of my days proving it to her one day, one hour, one minute at a time.
EPILOGUE
DEVYN
It had been a year since the night I walked into a swanky hotel in downtown Austin with a goat by my side. Henry and I had settled into a very comfortable life together since then. One filled with more love and laughter than I ever thought possible.
He and Graham had gone to town on an errand, so I settled into my favorite corner of the couch and pulled up the group text with my bookish besties. So much had happened to all of us since that silly pact we made. I wondered how they were all spending this Valentine’s Day.
Me: Anyone around?
Gem: Hey, boo. I’m here! Where’s your man with the magic hands?
Me: I never should have told y’all about that.
Once they found out Henry and I reconnected thanks to his ability to create a brace for Shirley out of scraps, they’d been teasing me non-stop about how talented he must be. I hadn’t admitted it yet, but the man did have skills—both in and out of the bedroom.
Gem: We’re all just jealous.
Me: Right. It’s not like your men don’t have some moves of their own.
Gem: A girl can’t kiss and tell.
Me: LOL
Gem: So, Dev, what big plans do you have for V-Day this year?
Me: We’ll probably just stay in. It’s hard to get away when I’ve got animals to feed and a kiddo to take care of.
Gem: I bet Henry will come up with something to surprise you.
Me: We’ll see.
He’d traded in his four-door sedan for a half-ton truck with a Diesel engine. I recognized the sound of the big truck coming up the drive.
Me: Speaking of H, he’s just getting home. Talk to you later.
Gem: Have a good night.
Me: They’re all good now, girl.
