When his fists punched into the dirt on either side of her, his massive body eclipsing her own, she knew running was no longer in the cards.

Time for plan B - talking.

“Antonio, are you in there?” She was halfway tempted to knock against his forehead and see if she could hear an echo, but, for obvious reasons, she refrained. In response, he let out a low growl as an incredibly inhumane voice commanded,“Don’t you ever try running from me again.”

That confirmed it for her. Antonio was as lost as she had been a few hours ago. Which meant she might have no choice but to get friendly with his beast.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Sophia Brenning

“Don’t confuse yourself, I’mstillrunning from you!” Sophia screamed at Antonio as she hurled a fist toward his chest. He caught it before she could do any damage, snatching both her wrists and pinning them over her head in one swift move, holding them there. “Youprick!”She spat at him with little thought about the repercussions of her actions.

He’s more animal than human right now!She tried reminding herself, but it was too late, she already baited the beast.

Knowing she had no shot at freeing her hands from his hold, she tried kicking him instead, aiming for his stomach.

When she made contact he didn’t even flinch. Instead, he sneered down at her. It was as if he wasplayingwith her! Was he enjoying this?

“You’re a lunatic!” She screamed at him. “What the hell did I even do to deserve this treatment?”

She’d kill to know the thoughts that were currently running through his head. If she knew what he was thinking, then everything might make a bit more sense to her. Right now she couldn’t make sense of anything.

In a huff she kicked her leg up to his stomach again. And again, he didn’t react. This tactic would worksomuch betterif his stomach wasn’t so…magnificent.A soft, weak stomach wouldreallydo the trick right now.

“Fuck,Fia… Stop.”

“Maybe I will.” She shot her leg up again.“When you let me go!”

“Now you’ve done it,” he groaned, shoving his hips between her thighs and forcing them apart, ensuring her physical surrender. “I’ll release you when you stophittingme.”He ground his teeth together.

“Ugh,”she rolled her head back in frustration. She was beginning to believe he didn’t have any plans to kill her. Though his feral expression told her otherwise. “Can you just explain why it looks like you want tokillme right now?”

She stopped trying to free herself, somehow managing to relax beneath him. When she did, she quickly becameveryaware of their closeness. His face was so near hers she could feel his breath against her skin, each breath feeling like a soft caress along her face. Her stomach flipped, excitement rousing inside her.

Her eyes widened in surprise. She waslustingfor him!

Wrong emotion, Sophia, she thought to herself. Wasn’t she supposed to be terrified right now?

“You think I intend to kill you?” Sadness flickered across his eyes so quickly she almost missed it. “I don’t. But Idointend to keep you safe. Which I can only do if youdon’t run from me.”Despite being aware of the fact that he was much more animal that human at the moment, Sophia believed him.

“You expected me tonotrun from you while you looked at me like you were going to eat me?” Like a predator stalking its prey.

His expression darkened. It almost looked as if he was looking at her with…hunger.“Eat you? Don’t put ideas in my head.”

She gasped and began twisting beneath him again in a futile attempt to free herself.

Groaning, he pressed a hand against her hip, holding her still. “Stop…that.Or Iwilleat you.”

It didn’t take much longer for her to realize that she misread the hunger in his eyes. He wasn’t actually going to eat her. At least, not in the literal sense. She swallowed hard when she pictured what he was actually alluding to.

Then she felt it - his bulging erection pressing against her thigh.“Oh,”she breathed and stopped squirming. “S-sorry.” She didn’t know what else to say.

He raised a brow. “Are you?” She felt as its length jerked against the material of his pants. Her eyes went wide, her cheeks heating. As shivers swept through her body, she realized she was heating up in more places than just her cheeks.

She knew she wasn’t supposed to want him like this. So why was she reacting this way? It was like she had no control over her body.

He has a mate, she reminded herself. He’s not in the right state of mind. Yet as she told herself this, her eyes grew hooded, her sense of reason drifting away as she wondered…Would it really be so wrong?
