K:What did you have for dinner?

Just a test to see if he would message K while talking to her.

“Any information from the police?” Evan asked.

“Ugh. No. I called again, and they told me they’d call me if they had anything.”

“Nothing from Jake either. They are looking to link it to Lauren’s mom, but they can’t find her. He’s got a private investigator.”

“Wonder what her plan is?”

“What do you mean?” Evan asked.

“It’s just, I doubt that she’s done. She didn’t get anything out of it.”

“Hmm.” Evan was quiet. “I didn’t think about it like that. It could have been just to shut the restaurant down.”

“I thought that, too. But everything we know about her says she’s after money.”

“Yeah. I’ll bring it up to Jake and see what he thinks.”

“Thanks.” The conversation lulled, and she waited for a chat to come through.

“Hey, Kayla?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for answering tonight.”

She melted. “I don’t want to not talk to you.”

“Same. Can I ask you a question, though?”

“Shoot.”

“Have you thought anymore about Monday?”

So much. “I haven’t decided anything yet, but yes.”

“I was worried you were going to hang up on me. I just needed to know that you were thinking about it.”

“I am.”

The oven beeped; her food was ready. She heard Evan laugh as she pulled the pan out of the oven.

“I’ll let you go eat your kid food.”

“Just because you can get it on a kid’s menu doesn’t mean that adults can’t eat it,” she defended playfully.

“Good night, Kayla.”

“Good night, Evan.”

The call ended, and she found she felt better than she had in a while. It was nice to talk to him again, even if the topics had been a little heavy at times.

Unable to resist the nagging thought that he was talking to her and K at the same time, she opened the messages as she ate. He hadn’t written her back while they were talking or even after. That was a good sign, right?

On the other hand, he hadn’t mentioned talking to K tonight either. She wasn’t entitled to the information, and they had hardly discussed anything like being exclusive, but it felt wrong.
