“I was just thinking about how I overthought all this and nearly missed my chance with you,” Kayla answered honestly. It had been her own fault that things had taken as long as they did to get here.

“I wasn’t going anywhere. I told you that, and I meant it. You’re stuck with me.” Evan pulled her closer to him.

“If only I had gotten past my own mess sooner. We could have been doing this for so much longer,” she told him.

“Well, we just have to make up for lost time then,” Evan smiled.

Kayla’s stomach growled. She had gotten here late in the morning, and it was already dark outside. All they had done was burn calories so at some point she needed to eat.

“After I feed you,” he teased her. “Get up. Let’s go see what I can make you.”

“Or, we can order delivery from here and come up with some other way to pass the time.” She smirked at him.

“I like the way you think,” he said. “Where is my phone?”

Kayla laughed as Evan stood up looking for his phone. She hadn’t seen it, or hers for that matter, since she’d gotten here.

“Damn,” he said as he picked it up. “Jake’s been calling me.”

Kayla wrapped the sheet around her and got up as well. “My phone is definitely downstairs.”

“Stay. I’ll go get it.”

Evan left the room already dialing Jake. She took the time to straighten the blankets that they had made a mess of and grabbed Evan’s shirt and put it back on.

He walked back into the room still on the phone and handed her purse to her. “I’m going to put you on speaker with Kayla,” he said and then set the phone down. “Okay go ahead.”

“I’ve tried calling both of you to let you know that the last lead panned out. We were able to verify that it was her and then contact the police. I told them about the blackmail too, which has been pretty public, but I wanted to let you know in case they call you. My guys are still watching to make sure she doesn’t leave, and the police have said they will pick her up today.” Jake blew out a breath. “I’ll feel better when they have her.”

“That’s great,” Kayla told him.

“Really, man. Thanks a lot for your help with this,” Evan said.

“It’s the least I could do,” Jake said. “Kayla, I tried calling you and so did Lauren. I’ll let her know that you’re, umm, occupied.”

Kayla laughed.

“Hey, thanks for the blind date pick. I got there on my own, though.” Evan pulled her close to him.

“Doesn’t matter how you got there, I’m just glad you did.”

“Later, man. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“I’ll send a text when they pick her up,” Jake said.

Jake ended the call and Evan looked down at her. “I’m so glad that’s getting resolved.”

“Me, too.”

ChapterThirty

Evan

Evan had taken Kayla home Monday morning to shower and get ready. They were due at Catherine’s for a meeting with police, lawyers, and Thomas. Apparently, there were some unanswered questions, and the police needed the proof of the blackmail attempts.

“Ready!” Kayla came out of her bedroom dressed for the day, hair and make-up completely done.

“You know I’m just going to mess that all up later, right?” he joked as he got closer to her.
