Jake was waiting for her, a small bag in his hand, wearing swim trunks and a white shirt and sandals. Apparently, this weekend was for firsts. Jake surprised her at every turn, but seeing him dressed, in person, in anything other than a suit was welcome but stunning.
They made quick work of getting from his apartment to hers. Once she was in the apartment, she slipped her shoes off and picked them up, turning to Jake.
“I’ll be really quick,” she promised and took off for her room.
She wished she’d thought at all about what she was going to wear before now. Instead, she was stuck standing in front of her closet and debating.
Swimsuits weren’t her thing normally, so she only had two. She grabbed the two-piece black one and a white coverup and jumped in the shower.
Feeling proud of herself and finally having brushed her teeth, she went in search of Jake.
“Ready?” she asked when she found him on the couch.
“I am, where’s your bag?”
“Bag?” She thought this was just a party.
“To change out of wet clothes?” he offered.
“Oh, I probably won’t get in the pool.” She waved him off.
“Come on, really?” he asked.
“I don’t usually.” She gave in, though, and went back to her room, pulling out a small bag.
Jake followed and took a seat on her bed as she packed. “Are you down for more of the show tonight?”
“You’re not sick of me yet?” She couldn’t help but think that if he wasn’t yet, he probably would be soon.
She knew the guest list and the women that would be there were much more the type she usually saw Jake with. Chewing her lip again, she debated if it was worth even agreeing, knowing she’d probably come home alone.
“If you don’t want to hang out again tonight, that’s fine, no hard feelings.”
“I’m game. Let me grab some things for overnight then, so I can at least brush my teeth.”
She packed another set of clean clothes, nothing fancy, shorts, a top, and quickly shoved her panties in the bag next to him. Then she searched the closet for a smaller bag, packing her toiletries.
“Ready, for sure this time,” she told him as she zipped the bag closed.
Jake picked up her bag and took her hand with his as they walked out of the apartment and got into his car.
She looked out the window as he drove. It was a good drive to Cade’s house outside the city. Well, everything outside the city was quite a drive. Lost in her thoughts, she paid no mind to the scenery as they passed.
What, she wondered, were they going to be when they got there? Were they together? Were they not? Where did they stand? It had been two dates, both of which were unconventional at best, so where did that leave things?
“You okay?” Jake asked after a while.
She cleared her throat and took a sip of water as she tried to refocus on anything other than those thoughts.
“I’m fine, just thinking,” she told him honestly.
“What’s on your mind?” he asked.
She debated if she should tell him or not. Up to this point, she’d been mostly honest about her thoughts with Jake, even if she hadn’t let him know how big of a deal his money was to her, or maybe it was her lack of it that bothered her more.
“What are we doing?” she asked finally.
“Going to Cade’s?” he asked.
