Ummm, okay?
“Wait, tested for what?” Murmur asked.
Darrius looked up from his phone to me and Sarah, with an intensity in his eyes, almost as if he didn’t want to say it out loud. The air seemed somehow heavier in that moment. Then, finally, he whispered, “Nephilim blood.”

Too Many Things Happening, Not Enough Coffee
Ihadn’t been able to sleep much that night. After dinner, I tried to talk to Sarah. She just blew me off, saying she needed sleep. She still hadn’t been able to look me in the eye. Sarah had never been mad at me like this before. I didn’t know how to handle it.
It’s not like it was my fault demons attacked me in the park. It certainly wasn’t my fault they followed me home and broke down our door. Though I could have told her Rune’s secret before we were attacked again, I didn’t. I could make the excuse that I planned to tell her the moment I had a chance, but I wasn’t sure that was true.
My eyes were itchy from a lack of sleep, my head pounded, my lip throbbed, my neck was stiff, and my ribs ached. I needed a few gallons of coffee and a bottle of Tylenol.
My phone pinged on the nightstand. I had to slide to the other side of the massive bed to reach it. The room they’d given me was beautiful, and the bed was extremely comfortable. I don’t know what these sheets were made from, but I might try to steal them when we went back home.
Was that weird?
Probably.
Was it worth it?
God, yes!
Finally able to reach my phone, the light from the screen irritated my eyes even more.
Rune
Good morning. I hope you slept well. Breakfast is in the dining room if you are hungry. I have coffee hot and waiting for you.
Morning. I need the coffee. I’ll wake up Vivi and Sarah and be there in a minute.
Rune
Sarah is already down here. Let Vivi sleep. I don’t think she and Evie went to bed until a few hours ago.
Fucking rude.
I was here wanting to talk to Sarah and head down together to face everything head-on, and she’d ditched me.When we were shown our rooms and she blew me off, I said we would talk in the morning. She nodded; I thought that meant before seeing everyone else.
I guess not.
All sisters fight, it’s a fact of life, even sisters from other misters. What we had never done before was shut down. I didn’t know how to handle this.
Okay, I will be down in a moment.
I stumbled to the ensuite bathroom that was bigger that my bedroom at home. I looked longingly at the huge claw-foot tub. I wasn’t sure when, but I was going to spend some quality time in that tub with bubbles and a bath bomb.
I splashed water on my face, brushed my teeth, and tried to tame my hair into something at least semi-presentable before getting dressed and heading downstairs. I didn’t know why I bothered though because the bruises on my face and neck would not get any prettier, but at least a fresh bandage on the stitches looked better.
In the dining room, the side table had platters of food laid out and a big metal carafe of coffee. Sarah sat at the main table next to Murmur, her feet propped up on the chair next to her. I was clearly not welcome to sit there.
Fine. Fuck her, then.
I wanted to sit next to Rune anyway.
Rune pulled out the chair next to him for me. I took a seat and smiled. He grinned back and poured me a fresh cup of coffee. The coffee was perfect. Hot, strong, and sweet, just like the man I was sitting next to. I wasn’t even sure which one I wanted more.
