“What. The. Fuck?”
I was right.
“Felix.” Jane finished pulling on her shorts and held out her hands placatingly. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“Are you sure? Because it looks like I just caught you in bed with your so-called boss! The same guy I warned you about.”
Yup, the kid was definitely sharp, not that it was particularly difficult to figure out what we were up to, considering I was still resting against the pillows with my shirt off.
But I was more impressed that he had warned her of me. It showed that he, unlike his little sister, had good judgment.
Jane glanced back at me as if shocked that I was still there. It was like she assumed I would get up and start panicking when she did. She probably didn’t realize how strange all this was to me.
The fact that she was so freaked out that her brother caught her having sex was weird. Also that she wasn’t kicking him out and telling him to mind his fucking business. She was a grown-ass woman doing whatever she wanted. He had no right to tell her what to do. She also wasn’t his mother and didn’t have to get his approval to see someone.
But Jane’s face was filled with frantic guilt regardless as she started to say, “Alright, it is what it looks like. But I can explain—”
“Please,” her brother scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. “Enlighten me. What is there to explain about the fact that you’re sleeping with this…manwhore.”
I didn’t like the way he said it, but since I resembled the remark, I let it go.
What I couldn’t let go of was when he continued to rant at his sister, getting louder and angrier as he spoke, saying, “I can’t believe you. I thought you were smarter than this. Do you even know anything about this guy? Who he really is? And yet you’ve brought them into your house, where your siblings live, and are sleeping with him with the door unlocked, where Emmett or Angel could have walked in? I can’t believe you’ve gone and turned yourself into one of his—”
“Careful,” I warned, and they both turned at my low tone. I didn’t much care that he was all but calling me a pass-around, but I knew he was dangerously close to calling his sister a dirty name, and I wouldn’t allow that. Neither would the beast within me, the one that had already claimed Jane as his own.
The thought should bother me more than it did.
But it didn’t. What did bother me was that the little shit Jane called a brother had the nerve to double down with, “Well, that’s exactly what she’s acting like. Like,Mom. Except Mom could at least admit it to herself. Meanwhile, you’re always—”
In a quick movement, I swept out of bed and started walking toward him, ready to teach him a lesson.
Jane halted my progress with her hands on my chest. She didn’t really hold me back so much as I simply stopped because I didn’t want to bulldoze her.
Still, I sidestepped her, determined to get to the asshole.
She stepped in my way again.
“That’s enough.” She glanced up at me with pleading eyes. “Please, could you just give us a moment?”
I raised a disbelieving eyebrow at her. “You want me to do nothing while the disrespectful little shit calls you a whore?”
She shut her eyes at the last word as though she knew exactly how bad it was, but a part of her didn’t want to accept it.
“He didn’t mean it like that,” she said. “He’s just shocked. Just let me talk to him.”
I frowned at her. I just didn’t get her. At work, she was a whole force of nature, bulldozing through anyone who stood in her way. She never took crap from anyone. But when it came to her siblings, she turned into a complete doormat and was able to give up everything for them. She’d already given up her life, and now she was giving up her will too.
The whole thing pissed me off.
Whatever, I thought. It isn’t your problem. She isn’t your problem. You have your own problems to worry about.
Like finding out about Lorenzo.
I shook my head at her in disappointment and walked away.
As much as I hated to admit it, that took precedence over everything else. I’d noted the paper on the bedside table when we first started making out, so now I walked over there, usingthe guise of picking my shirt off the floor to glance at the paper. It was a phone number, most likely his.
I memorized it quickly, in that split second, before I turned back around. They were both watching me, Felix with defiant anger and Jane in a sort of plea.
