“You look familiar,” Felix commented. “Where have I seen you before?”

“I would say in your dreams, but unfortunately for you, I don’t roll that way.”

Felix’s eyes flared, and I could tell he was annoyed, but he didn’t let that deter him. Instead, he eyeballed Luca even harder.

“This is Luca Rossi,” I told Felix so that his brain didn’t explode from thinking too hard. “He’s Lorenzo’s brother.”

Felix’s eyes widened until they nearly took up his entire face. He opened his mouth like he was going to say something, then glanced between Luca and me rapidly before shutting his mouth again. Then he crossed his arms over his chest and sent me an ‘Are you insane?’ look.

That look confused me. What did he mean by it? Lorenzo and Felix had only met a few times, but they’d gotten along well enough. Or at least Felix hadn’t given me the impression that they didn’t get along.

So why would he have a problem with Lorenzo’s brother?

Luca caught the look and cocked an eyebrow. “You got something to say to me, kid?”

Felix shook his head, although his face said the exact opposite.

“Are you going to stay for dinner?” Beth asked.

“No,” Felix and I spat out at the same time, though we were each visibly confused by the other’s reaction.

Beth looked at both of us, offended on our guest’s behalf, and Luca looked amused. He then addressed Beth, saying, “As much as I’d love to, I have a pile of work to take care of. Your sister left a mess at the office for me to clean up.”

“You really work for him?” Beth asked, her eyes wide with excitement.

“You really work for him?” Felix repeated in a completely different tone of voice.

“Yes, and yes,” I answered each of them, then turned back to Luca.

“I’ll see you tomorrow at work,” he said.

Then, he saluted and walked out the door like there weren’t three sets of eyes on his back.

The second he left, they both turned to me.

“You’re working for Luca Rossi?” Beth asked excitedly, grabbing my arms in her exuberance. I hadn’t seen her this excited since she was a little girl, and I won a trip to Disney World.

Felix, on the other hand, looked nearly apoplectic. “No. Nope. Nada. You can’t work for that guy.”

“Why not?”

“Jeez, Jane, don’t you know who he is?”

“Yeah,” I said. “An extremely irritating and wealthy club owner who needs a manager for his club. That’s all I need to know about him.”

“Also that he’s extremely hot,” Beth chimed in.

“Hot and too old for you,” I said. I wasn’t exactly sure how old Luca was, but looks-wise, I would place him in his late thirties at least, even though the bastard was probably older. He was probably just one of those people who looked good for their age.

“You shouldn’t work for him,” Felix repeated.

“He pays sixty an hour.”

“Still. That guy’s dangerous. He’s not good for you, either.

“Oh yeah?” I regarded my brother curiously. I hadn’t seen him this worked up about something in a long time. “Dangerous in what way?”

“Dangerous in a…dangerous way. Just take my word for it.”
