“Mom.” I roll my eyes. I don’t have the energy for this right now. If my parents don’t calm down, they’re going to have to leave so I can rest.
“Don’tMomme. Why is this the first we’re hearing about this?”
I rub the bridge of my nose with my injured hand and immediately regret it. My head hurts worse than I’m letting on. “It’s new. I was planning on introducing you to him at dinner tonight.”
“It can’t be that new, considering the way you’re sitting on his lap.”
“Anna.” Dad steps up behind Mom and rests his hand on her back. “Calm down. Getting yourself worked up will only make Sophia worse. She needs rest.”
My mom lets out a low sigh. “You’re right. But we’re not done talking about this.”
“Are we ever?” I mumble under my breath.
Mom opens her mouth like she’s going to say something else but stops herself. Dad may not like that I race cars either, but he’s at least good at keeping Mom in check. He’ll make sure she doesn’t hound me too much until they’re sure I’m feeling better.
“Listen,” I say. “I’m exhausted. It’s been a long day and I need to rest. We can talk more tomorrow.”
Mom stares at me like she doesn’t like that option, but Dad nods in agreement.
“Alright, pumpkin. We’ll leave,” my dad says. Mom’s head whips around like she’s going to object, but Dad squeezes her shoulder, and she stops. “At least give us a hug. This has been stressful for us too.”
“Of course, Dad.” Mac lets go of me long enough for my parents to hug me. They both hold on to me for longer than is necessary. But I don’t complain. They need to know I’m okay.
A few moments later, Mac and I are alone in my room. He pulls me back onto the bed and curls up behind me, spooning his body around mine. He brushes my hair from my face and kisses my temple.
“Are you hungry?” he asks.
“Yeah, but don’t get up. This feels good.”
He chuckles and digs around in his pocket. He pulls his phone out and starts typing. “I’ll get my brothers to bring us something. It’s late and you need to eat something before you fall asleep.”
“As long as you don’t go anywhere, then it’s fine.”
He finishes typing his message before he rests his phone on the bed in front of me. “Don’t worry, baby. I’m not going anywhere tonight.”
Chapter21
When you’re an asshole, work double time to make up for it.
Mac
My hovering is annoying Sophia. I can’t help myself. Ever since her accident, I can’t stand to let her out of my sight.
It’s only been a few days since we got home from Cincinnati. The hospital kept her for one night. All her test results were good, and aside from her injured arm, the doctor cleared her for normal activity.
She spent one night with her parents before I drove her home. I stayed in a nearby hotel, and it was the worst kind of torture. I hated being away from her so soon after the accident. But she’d insisted one night with her mom and dad would assure them she was okay.
She returned to work today, and I’m being a dick. It’s unintentional, but a dick, nonetheless.
I say I’m just trying to help her ease back into her routine slowly. She says I keep doing her job and not letting her work. Help is help. I wish she would take it.
She rolls out from under the car she’s currently working on, and I rush over to her with my hand out. She knocks it away. “Mac, you need to stop.”
“Let me help you up.”
She glares at me. “I don’t need help!”
She nudges her foot on the ground and tries to roll away from me, but my leg blocks her.
