“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I had to see you.” I glanced over her shoulder. “Where’s Brad?”

She pursed her lips. “Not here.”

For some reason, that made me feel better.

“Look, I’m sorry about this morning. I tried to smooth things over with him. I just needed to talk to him, to figure out how to move forward. I didn’t expect him to come into the house, or I would never have—”

“What do you want?” Rebecca asked.

I blinked at her. “What?”

“What do you want?” she asked again. “Am I just fun for right now, or do you consider a future with me?”

“I want a future with you, Rebecca.”

“And how does that look?” she asked.

I shook my head, confused. “I don’t understand what you’re asking.”

“In your mind, what does a future with me look like?”

I blinked at her. “I want you by my side.”

“What about a future together? A career for me? Kids?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought that far. Kids… I don’t know if I can do kids. I have the company, and we’ll have more than enough money, so you won’t have to work—”

“What if I want to work?” she asked.

“As a nurse?”

She frowned at me. “What’s wrong with being a nurse?”

“Sweetheart, you don’t have to do anything like that anymore. I’ll take care of you.”

She shook her head. “I should have known.”

“What?”

She pushed past me, walking to her door. What was happening?

“I don’t understand why you’re so upset.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because I won’t change. Not for you, and not for your circles and yourpeopleso that I fit into your world and your image. I like being a nurse. I like who I am, and I want to hold on to that. Everyone wants me to be different. My parents, Brad, and now you.”

“I don’t want you to be different!”

“Just not a nurse.”

“That’s not what I’m saying!” God, this was spinning out of control. “Why do you think I want you to change?”

“I’m too young for you, Landon,” she said tightly. “Let’s just accept what it is and be done with it.”
