I shook my head and took a glass, pouring myself a whiskey from the same bottle.

“How did you get into the house?” I asked.

“We had an appointment to talk business this morning,” Brad said.

I stared at him and blanched. He was right—I’d asked him to come by earlier in the week. When Rebecca had told me she was off today, I’d only thought about spending the night with her, telling her how I felt. I didn’t think about anything else.

“You didn’t respond when I knocked on the door, so I came around the back because your fucking sliding door is always open.”

Damn it, I really had to do something about my security.

“I can’t blame you for forgetting. It’s what happens when you’re balls deep in a woman.”

“Come on, don’t be crass,” I said.

“Why? Is it because it’s one of my friends that suddenly we should have respect when we talk about the women you fuck?”

“I’m not just fucking her,” I said. “I love her, Brad.”

Brad scoffed. “Yeah, right. She’s just a way for you to forget. This is what you do—you find something to occupy yourself with, you get obsessed because you’re bored and lonely, and when you’re done, you move on.”

“You can’t compare Rebecca to golf or mountain biking,” I said, referring to the two hobbies I’d done the past year to do exactly what Brad said. “She’s a person, and I’m serious about her. I was going to tell you about it.”

“When?”

“Damn it, I only told her last night that I wanted to talk to you. You weren’t supposed to rock up here unannounced.”

“You weren’t supposed to have my best friend in your bed!”

Fuck, Brad was pissed, and I understood why. It must have been a shock to find Rebecca in my bed, I was sure of that. Rebecca was pissed at me too. I just had to deal with the fallout with one person at a time.

Right now, Brad stood in front of me, furious at me for betraying him.

“I know you don’t get it,” I said. “I’ve never really had anyone serious, and this is weird.”

“That’s an understatement.”

“I really care about her. We’ve been together for a while now, and this isn’t just a fling.”

“How long?” Brad asked with a frown.

“Since I hurt my ankle. You sent her here to check up on me, and one thing led to another.”

“Fuck, I should have come here myself,” Brad said. “Then again, I didn’t think my dad would make a move on my best friend.”

“Will you stop saying that?” I asked. “I didn’t just make a move on her, Brad. There’s something about her that draws me in, and if I think it’s meant to be, then why the fuck shouldn’t I do it?”

“Because she’s my age!” Brad cried out. “Because she’s my friend, and most of all, because she’s not the kind of woman us Cavaliers go after. Isn’t that what you guys are always saying? Hell, I get so much shit for looking at women who aren’t in our circles, and you’re datingher?”

“Don’t talk about her like she’s not good enough.”

“Then why did you put so much pressure on me to find someone better?”

“I never did,” I said.

“You never made me feel like anyone I wanted was good enough,” Brad said. “It’s always about the company, the Leggatt name, marrying well so I can carry forth the legacy.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t know you felt that kind of pressure. I never meant for you to feel you can’t date someone if it’s not a woman in our circles. I never said that.”
