Elias shook his head. “The whole world has lost its fucking mind.”
“What’s going on here?” Archie asked, coming toward us. Elias was losing his shit, making a scene. It wasn’t how I’d wanted it to go.
“Ask Landon,” Elias sneered.
Archie frowned.
“You’re making a big thing out of nothing,” I said.
“That’s what you say now, but when she takes you for everything you have, you’ll be sorry you’re polluting the Cavalier name like this, and it will all be too late.”
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I asked. “You’re pissed that Gunner won’t follow in your footsteps, so now you’re fucked off that anyone finds happiness. You can rant about your son all you want, but I’m your peer, and the choices I make are none of your business.”
“If that’s how you feel about it, then keep your mouth shut about shit like this. What the hell has got into you? A fucking twenty-year-old?” Elias snapped, and he stormed away, leaving the Cavalier HQ.
The other guys had all fallen silent, and they looked at me.
“What’s going on?” Archie asked.
I sighed. “Nothing. Elias just can’t hold his liquor or handle it that anyone does something other than the social norm.”
“Did he say you’re dating a twenty-year-old?”
“She’s thirty,” I said with a sigh.
Archie frowned. “A bit unconventional, don’t you think?”
“If you give me shit, I’m leaving,” I snapped. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“Hey, I’m not giving you shit,” Archie said, holding up his hands.
A few of the other guys came closer.
“I get to decide who I want to be with, and if any of you give me hell about it, I have no qualms walking away from the Cavaliers altogether.”
“Let’s not be rash,” Ted said.
“I’d rather leave this shithole and the men who can’t practice forward-thinking than leave Rebecca because they think I should,” I said to him.
“Wait,” Noah said. “Rebecca? Brad’s friend?”
I nodded. “Yeah. We’re together.” The cat was out of the damn bag. It hadn’t gone exactly as I’d planned, but it was bound to get out at some point.
“What does he have to say about that?” Aaron asked.
I was so glad Brad wasn’t here today. If he had been, this would have been a shitty way to find out.
“He doesn’t know,” I said. “I’ll tell him, but I don’t want him to find out from anyone else. It’s not right. Hell, this thing just happened, and I don’t want it to get away from us.”
“If Elias keeps his mouth shut,” Noah said, “Brad won’t hear any of it from us.”
“I appreciate that,” I said, glancing at Noah and Aaron and Archie, who’d all come to us when Elias had stormed off.
“Are you sure about this?” Archie asked.
“Not that it’s anyone’s business, but yeah,” I said. “I am.”
“We’re just concerned,” Noah said. “It’s going to be a rocky road ahead with a lot of people giving you hell, Brad included, if I know him well enough, and I think I do. You just need to be sure this is what you want. It will be pointless if it ends in a couple of months, and you walked through this hell for nothing.”
