I knocked on the sliding door.
“Landon?” I called out.
I didn’t wait for an answer. I pulled on the door, and it opened. The moment it did, an alarm went off. It screeched loudly, telling the world there was an intruder on the property. I clapped my hands over my ears. My first reaction was to run, but if Landon was in there, hurt and in need of help, I couldn’t just leave.
Instead of turning my back and getting the hell out of dodge, I stepped into the open door.
A crutch swung at me, and I ducked. It crashed against the glass door. Landon hobbled precariously on one leg, trying to right the crutch he’d nearly lost.
“Landon, it’s me!” I shouted.
The screech of the alarm drowned out my voice, and Landon’s eyes were bleary. He had gray stubble on his chin, and he looked shaggy and confused.
He swung again but lost his balance and fell to the ground. He cursed, although I could only read his lips, not hear his voice.
I held out my hands and kneeled before him. Now that he was on his ass, he was less dangerous.
“It’s me!” I shouted.
Landon frowned, recognition flickering in his eyes.
He tried to get up, and I helped him. He hobbled to a large panel with a multitude of switches and buttons and pressed a few of them. Finally, the alarm stopped. My ears kept ringing after the incessant sound was gone.
“What are you doing here?” Landon asked.
“You weren’t answering your phone or your gate, and Brad was worried. I came to see if you were still alive.”
Landon scratched his head. “Oh. I’m okay.”
I raised my eyebrows and looked him up and down. He was only wearing boxers, and his body was distracting. He was in great shape for his age, with the silver hair on his chest making him look distinguished.
I forced myself to look him in the eye again.
“You don’t look okay.”
“Well, when I’m not scared shitless by an intruder, I’m better.” He huffed.
I stared at him and burst out laughing.
The whole thing was so damn comical I couldn’t help myself.
Landon looked sheepish for a moment before he burst out laughing too.
“How the hell did you get in here? I have a top-of-the-range security system.”
“Is this the one you guys sell to your clients?”
Landon nodded slowly.
“Well, it’s shit.”
Landon gasped at my blunt response.
“I climbed the wall and came around the house. Your door was open.”
“Oh,” Landon said, looking confused. He shook his head. “I’ll have to talk to Brad about this. I took those painkillers, my ankle was throbbing like a bitch, and they knocked me out cold.”
“Were you drinking?” I asked.
