“What if she changed her mind in the meantime? What if she did all that to fool you? She could’ve killed me.” I can’t believe he fell for Marya’s stories. “Every single supposedly good thing she does brings some benefit to her!”
“I realized she was like the old Balakins. She does what she does, but she’d never harm her own blood. It goes against her family’s values. And yes, it was risky, but I trusted my instincts. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry for everything. If you want to kill me for it, I understand.” He bows his head.
“I’m not going to kill you, Theo. Just show me how the fuck she got into our systems and tell me everything you know about her. Everything! And if you want to stay anywhere near me, you can’t be in contact with her. She left messages for you in that bar’s restroom, didn’t she? That’s why you found me so easily when I went after her. That other woman wasn’t a decoy. She was collecting your damn message for Marya!”
He only gives me a nod.
“You’re no longer my second-in-command, and I have no idea if I’ll ever be able to trust you again.”
“Actually, Marya kind of fired me already. She said you were all grown up now.”
“Of course she did.” I shake my head.
Am I ever going to be free of Marya?
Probably not. I suspect she’s just going to find another way to torment me, but I’m not going to let her.
Epilogue
LUCA
“Put that cabinet over there,”I say, pointing at the end of the room.
The men carry it past me, and I look around the room. It’s a bit strange that I’m overseeing the furnishing and decoration of Aurora’s and my new home when I’m usually taking care of something far more sinister.
But Aurora is very close to giving birth, and I want everything to be perfect for her and the baby.
“No, a little to the left,” I say.
I thought doing regular human stuff would be boring, but it’s actually fun. Usually, when I bought an apartment or a house, I just hired someone to take care of everything. But Aurora had so many ideas, and brainstorming with her gave me some nice ideas too.
This house already feels more like a home than any other place I’ve ever lived. Hopefully, it’ll be our permanent residence.
My phone rings. “Yeah?”
“You have to come quickly. Aurora’s in labor!” Alessandro says.
My pulse speeds up. “I’m coming!”
I rush to the hospital as fast as possible.
As I race through the hallway, I run into Alessandro and his wife.
“Where is she?” I ask, feeling like my heart is going to burst out of my chest.
What if something goes wrong? This is a situation where I feel completely helpless. I can’t do anything to help Aurora, and it’s driving me crazy.
“Just relax. The nurse said she’d come for you,” Alessandro says as he places his hand on my back.
“She’ll be fine.” Scarlett gives me a small smile.
I pace up and down the hallway. When a nurse shows up in my line of sight, I immediately dash to her.
“Aurora Di Domenico?” I say.
“Come with me,” the nurse says, and I follow her into one of the rooms.
“Hey,” Aurora says as she looks up at me, a smile on her face. “Come and meet little Patricia.”
