I frown. “What do you mean?”

“I’m pregnant. You’re going to have a half brother or a half sister.”

I run my hand over my face. That poor child.

“Who’s the father?” I ask. “Please tell me it’s not Marcello.”

“No, it’s not him, and it doesn’t matter who it is. I need the Balakin bloodline to continue, and it will. Unfortunately, you’re officially a Di Domenico.”

“Does this mean I’m going to have to prepare for war with you one day? I’m sure you still want revenge on me and the Fornaris.” I eye her carefully for any clues.

“Like I said, you’re not your father. I would love to resurrect him so I can kill him, but you had nothing to do with his betrayal. As for the Fornaris, I can’t say that I like them. But they kept you safe, so I’m not holding a grudge. As long as you don’t come after me, I won’t come after you.”

“How did you get into my system? How did you know things that no one was supposed to know?”

“I have my eyes and ears everywhere, especially when my family is involved.”

A mole. There’s definitely a mole, but no one has been with me for such a long period of time. Even those who worked for my father aren’t close enough to me now to know...

There’s only one person who knows a lot of things about me. The only person who’s close enough to me. The only person who has access to my systems and who wouldn’t raise any flags.

How did I not see it sooner? The answer was right in front of me.

Theo.

“Don’t be mad at him,” Marya says. “All he ever did was to keep you safe. I haven’t always been very forthcoming with him either, so I’m sure he has some regrets, but it all worked out just fine.”

Fuck!

“Stop spying on me,” I say.

“Mm-hmm. Can we order some food now? I’m starving. I didn’t have so many food cravings when I was pregnant with you, but this baby...”

I grit my teeth. Marya is going to drive me crazy for the next I-don’t-know-how-many minutes that we have left.

* * *

“I want to know the truth,”I say once Theo and I are in my office. “I want to know how much of our friendship is a fucking lie.”

I want to stay calm, but I can’t hide the annoyance and pain in my voice. Theo has always been there for me, and to find out that he’s Marya’s spy is just too big of a blow.

“Our friendship isn’t a lie. I swear.” He keeps his gaze on mine. “I was very young when Marya approached me. I needed money for my family because I wasn’t earning enough as a new guard, and I made a deal with her. But our friendship... I didn’t fake any of that. It’s real. You’re like a brother to me.”

“And yet you gave Marya access to our systems. You pretended you didn’t know who it fucking was! If you’re really my friend, then why keep up with it? Why not just tell me?”

He licks his lips. “Because she’d never hurt you. I knew she had some kind of plan, but I didn’t know what it was. She was only supposed to send one message. One. But she was sneaky, and, yeah, I thought I royally fucked up, but—”

“How the fuck do you know she’d never hurt me?”

“When you were in rehab... She would hide close by every night. She was worried Alessandro’s men wouldn’t be able to protect you. Once, someone actually showed up. They broke in and got all the way to your room while you were asleep.”

“Yeah, I know. You were the one who stopped the guy.”

“No, I wasn’t. When I got to your room, she was there. The guy was dead at her feet. That’s how I met her. You and I were already friends. That’s when she asked me to watch over you for her and told me what she was doing. She let me take credit because she couldn’t let anyone know she was there. She went over to you and kissed your forehead.”

“I would’ve woken up if she’d gone anywhere near me, and that proves nothing.”

He shakes his head. “It was one of your bad days, and they gave you really strong sedatives.”
