My lips spread into a smile. Luca chose me. He’d been waiting to kill my father for so long, and now he doesn’t even care about what happens to him. He only wanted to make sure thatIwas fine.

How did I get so lucky to run into him? If I hadn’t, I’d still be trapped with my father, or I would be forced to marry some guy who wouldn’t give a damn about me.

“You know I would give up everything for you, don’t you?” Luca says. “Everything else fades in comparison to how I feel around you. It’s for the first time in, like, forever that I feel like I can be happy. There’s no weight on my shoulders anymore.”

“I know. I feel free too. It’s like I’m a completely different person. The old me wouldn’t even dare to hold a gun, let alone consider firing it. I should’ve just pulled the trigger. My father was right in front of me, but—”

“Hey.” He places his finger under my chin so I’d look up at him. “Don’t think about that. It’s never easy to pull the trigger. But I’m going to have to teach you how to shoot.”

“Yeah, I’d love that.”

“Then we have a deal.” He grins.

“What happens if my father dies?” I ask.

“Marya wants his territory. It was part of the deal that I signed to get your location. But if you want—”

“No. I’m not interested in anything that belongs to my father. Will Marya come after us?”

“No idea. She’s unpredictable. But you don’t have to worry about her. I’ll handle her. What you should do is start looking for a house that you like. I’ll have Theo make a list of good and safe neighborhoods. We want our child to have a happy life, right? But first get some rest, of course.”

I give him a nod. So many plans. So many things to look forward to. I finally have a future, and I can do whatever I want.

“What are you thinking about?” Luca asks, tilting his head at me.

“Nothing. Everything. I’m just so happy, and I want you to kiss me again.”

A smile crosses his face, and then his mouth is on mine.

CHAPTER27

Luca

“I wantedto bring him to you,” Alessandro says from the other end of the line, “but he was about to escape, so I shot him. Got him in the leg first. Then his chest. Twice.”

“Did you make sure he’s dead?” I say.

“Oh yeah. Definitely dead. You don’t have to worry about him resurrecting and showing up.”

“Good.” I thought that once Marcello was dead, I’d feel different somehow.

But I don’t feel anything. Maybe just a tiny little bit calmer because I know he won’t get a chance to hurt Aurora ever again.

“We should celebrate,” Alessandro says. “Throw a party or something. This is a big win.”

“Sure.”

“How’s Aurora?”

“She’s fine. Much better now that she’s at home.”

“Listen, I wanted to ask you something about Marya. I’m sure she’s made it known to people that she signed a deal with you, and I know you don’t want to look like someone who goes back on his word because that would have terrible consequences. Butyousigned the deal with her, and I didn’t. If you want me to take care of her for you, I can do it.”

“No. At least not at the moment. I’m on my way to meet with her right now.”

“Why?” Surprise laces his voice.

“She wants to have that conversation with me that she requested in exchange for information.”
