But the bewildered look on Theo’s face tells me that something very bad has happened.
“Aurora?” I breathe, looking around for her.
“She’s gone!”
“What do you mean she’s gone?” I stare at him, unable to comprehend what he’s saying.
It can’t be true.
Why would Aurora leave? Everything’s been going so well between us.
“Marya got into our systems again, but this time it was much worse. She left a message for Aurora. Marcello was torturing her friend Julia for information, and Marya sent Aurora to some place in the middle of nowhere to save her friend.”
“What?” My heart pounds like never before.
“One of your guns is missing. I checked. We brought the system down because of it, but it was too late. I’m so sorry.” Theo lowers his head. “I shouldn’t have—”
“What are you saying? Aurora left on her own with my gun to save Julia? How the hell did she get out of the building? Where the fuck were you? You were supposed to keep an eye on her!” My fingers curl into fists and I want to punch him.
Instead, I kick at the empty air.
“I was busy dealing with something else. I know it’s my fault, and I don’t know what to do. There was a threat in that message—if Aurora didn’t come alone or if she told anyone, Julia would die.”
“Fuck!” I rake my hand through my hair. “Why are you still standing here? Find her!”
“That’s the problem. I couldn’t reach you because the systems were down, and I didn’t want to risk contacting you because I thought Marcello and Marya were waiting exactly for that to happen so they could track you down. I sent the men who were here to that place. When they got there, the house was empty, and there were traces of blood on the bed.”
My world is collapsing around me again, and my chest hurts as if someone has punched a hole in it.
Not my Aurora. If anything happens to her and our baby, I’ll never forgive myself. I should’ve stayed here with her. None of this would’ve happened. I let myself believe that I could make it all work, but I fucked up.
“Marya?” I say through my teeth.
“Marcello. The house belongs to one of his companies.”
“Is she alive? Is Aurora alive?” I don’t want to consider the possibility that she’s not.
“I don’t know. There’s a big chance Marcello knows about her pregnancy. If he does, he won’t kill her.”
“Get everyone to look for her. I don’t care what it takes. We need to find her!”
Aurora is trapped somewhere, alone and scared, and I’m not with her. If I could, I’d trade places with her in a heartbeat.
“There’s one problem. We need to bring our systems back up, but the virus or the loophole Marya is using is still active.”
“Turn it on. I don’t give a fuck if they all come at me! I’ll get Aurora back.”
“It’s what they want.”
“And I said, I don’t fucking care!” I growl at him.
“Okay.” Theo gets his phone out.
Minutes trickle by with excruciating slowness as we try to get a drone over the area where Marcello held Julia and captured Aurora.
“There’s a new message,” Theo says. “From Marya.”
“What the fuck does she want now?” Probably to brag about how she and Marcello defeated me.
