“I’m not letting you die! I’m so sorry!” I tug at the rope and finally manage to undo it.
Julia sits up, and I try to help her to her feet. Her blonde hair is reddish and matted with dirt and dried blood.
Voices fill the hallway, and dread fills my stomach. I pull Julia up to her feet and start toward the window, but we’re not fast enough. I snatch the gun off the nightstand and point it at the men who enter the room.
My father bursts into laughter when he sees me. “Aurora, what a lovely surprise.” His face darkens.
“Stay back or I’ll shoot you!” I aim the gun at him.
He tsks as his men point their weapons at me. “Put the gun down, Aurora. What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
“Let Julia go and I’ll put it down.”
“No! We’ll both go,” Julia says. “Get out of our way or Aurora will shoot you!”
My father sighs as if he’s bored. “Stupid children. All right. Julia walks, you stay. I don’t give a fuck about her anyway. But you... You’re not going anywhere.”
“Okay,” I say.
“No.” Julia’s wide eyes turn to me. “I’m not going anywhere without you.”
“You have to. Please.” I don’t want all this to be for nothing.
We can’t stand here forever. My father’s men will win eventually or more of them will show up. Now that I’m here, my father doesn’t care about Julia enough to waste a bullet on her.
“Come on. Hurry. Before I change my mind,” my father snaps.
I push Julia toward them.
The men part, and my father steps to the side. Julia squeezes past them, and then I hear the thud of her feet as she runs down the hallway.
“Now put the gun down,” my father says.
“I’ll wait until I know she’s safe.” I glance through the window.
Julia is running across the field toward the trees. Even if I’m wrong and my father decides to kill her anyway, at least she’ll have a good head start.
My finger hovers over the trigger. I should just pull it. Julia is gone. My father is right in front of me.
As if he can read my thoughts, my father steps out of the room.
“Get her,” he says.
I aim at the men, but there are too many of them. They’re on me in a second, and my gun is yanked out of my hand. They shove me down to the floor and tie my hands behind my back.
“You’re lucky you’re still useful to me,” my father says as he reappears in the doorway. “If a little bird hadn’t told me Luca Di Domenico knocked you up, you’d be dead now. But now I have big plans for you and for that little shit’s spawn.”
“You’re a monster!” I scream.
“Take her where he’ll never find her.” It’s all my father says before he turns on his heel and strolls away.
CHAPTER25
Luca
“Luca!”Theo yells as soon as I walk through the door of my apartment.
Our communication system has been cut off, and I have no idea what’s going on. But sometimes that stuff happens, and our attacks were a success. Our tech team can bring everything down if someone’s sniffing around. I assume thatsomeoneis Marya.
