“Marya?” I ask because I don’t think I’ve ever heard that name or it must’ve slipped my mind.
“My birth mother,” Luca says.
“Your birth mother works with my father?” My eyebrows shoot up. “What?”
“I think she’s playing him, but yeah, they’ve met and they’re plotting something,” Luca says. “For some reason, it’s in Marya’s interest not to reveal any info about Aurora to Marcello.”
“Maybe she wants to side with you after all,” Theo says.
Luca snorts. “Yeah, right. As if that’s ever going to happen. She wants to destroy us both. She’s probably going to try to blackmail me with the information that she has.”
“But how did she get it? How does she know about me?” I ask.
“That’s a good question,” Luca says. “Probably from a mole or another breach in our security. We need to figure that out.”
“We’re working on it,” Theo says. “But nothing so far. Marya probably has one of the best hackers on her side.”
“So we know where Marcello’s men are?” Luca asks.
“More or less. It looks like they’re in a hurry, and it’s Marcello’s territory, so they think they’re safe.”
A grin spreads across Luca’s face. “We should attack. They’re distracted. All we have to do is sneak through Cole’s territory, which will be easy because he’s still in hiding and his men are distraught, and then we’ll get to Marcello’s men.”
“But they’re scattered,” Theo says. “If we start a war now—”
“No, we’re not starting a war,” Luca says. “We’ll just attack them. A few small attacks. They won’t do much, but they’ll shake Marcello up. He’ll be pissed even more because no one’s supposed to be able to get to him or dare to attack him like that, as if he was some insignificant gang leader. Our attacks will also catch the attention of the cops. Yeah, Marcello has them in his pocket, but people will talk. They’ll at least have to pretend they’re doing something on the streets. It’ll slow him down.”
“Irritating Marcello sounds like a good idea. I’ll set up the teams.” Theo smiles. “Wait, Aurora knows where Marcello’s house is, right?”
“I do, yeah,” I say.
“So what are we waiting for? We can get him!”
“I thought about that, but we need to be sure when exactly he’ll be at home, and we can’t let him realize that we know too soon,” Luca says.
“There’s also a ton of security,” I say. “He gets all kinds of alerts. The only reason Julia and I could even get past the guards was that she stole her dad’s schedule. There’s a small gap every few hours when you can get to the house unseen if you know the alarm codes, but they change their schedule every day and they get it only a week or so in advance.”
“We’ll leave that for another day. Let him think his home is still safe. If Marya didn’t fuck that up for us too. Whatever the case, it can’t be done in a rush. First, let’s do this. I’ll go with one of the teams,” Luca says, and I furrow my brow at him.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Theo says.
“I agree with Theo.” Which is a surprise, but I don’t want Luca to go anywhere near my father or his men.
“It’ll be fine. I just want Marcello to know that I can get to his territory whenever the hell I want. If I’m with my men, there’ll be no doubt who attacked and everyone will talk about it. His enemies, his friends. Everyone.” Luca turns to me. “I’d love to stay with you, but I have to do this. I promise I’ll come back to you.”
I want to beg him not to do it, but it’s what he wants. I don’t want him to be unhappy and restless.
“Okay,” I say. “But please call me as soon as you’re done so I know you’re fine.”
“Yeah, of course. You’ll have access to all the info and my computer. You’ll be able to see all the messages and everything anyway, but yeah, I’ll call.”
Theo’s forehead is creased, and it looks as if he’s trying to figure Luca and me out.
“What?” Luca asks Theo.
“Nothing.” Theo lifts his hands up. “I’m just not used to... Well, seeing you like this. In love and everything. It’s weird, man.”
“You’ll get used to it,” Luca says. “I’ll go get ready. You set up the teams.”
