“Yes, you are.” I place my hand on his cheek. “You’re nothing like him. You would never do things that he did.”

It’s not our fault we were born into this. It’s not our fault that things happened the way they did. But we deserve a chance at love, don’t we? Everyone does. Everyone who’s willing to leave the darkness and walk into the light.

“I love you,” he says, a smile coating his lips. “I’ve never said that to anyone.”

“I love you too, and I haven’t said it to anyone else either.”

“Good.” He captures my lips with his. “Because I meant what I said. You’re mine, Aurora, and you’ll be Aurora Di Domenico. If you agree.”

“Wait, Luca Di Domenico, did you just ask me to... marry you?”

“I did.”

“Isn’t it a bit too soon?”

“I don’t know. It just felt like the right thing to do. Marcello would be pissed.” He grins. “We don’t have to do it right away.”

“Okay. Yes.”

“Yes?”

“Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He kisses me again, and I’m happy. I’m so damn happy that I could cry.

CHAPTER24

Aurora

“Maybe we should discussthis in private,” Theo says to Luca.

I don’t think Theo likes me. It was obvious on his face as soon as I walked into the office. But Luca wants me to be in on all the things, because why not? I’m going to be a part of his family. His wife. The mother of his child.

Mafia bosses like my father keep everything to themselves and think only about themselves. That’s not what Luca and I want. We want to be a real family. No secrets. No worrying that one of us is hiding something from the other.

I’ll feel calmer if I know what’s going on with my father too. It just makes sense. Before, I had zero control over my life or over anything, but now, I’m free. I’m free to make my own choices and have opinions.

Luca and I want to be partners, not two people stuck playing roles we don’t want or like. I don’t think I’d be able not to worry about him if I didn’t know where he was or what he was doing. Just because I’m a mafia princess doesn’t mean I’m incapable of understanding anything about the mafia business.

“Aurora is going to be my wife,” Luca says. “Whatever you have to say to me, you can say it in front of her. She’ll have access to all the information just as me.”

“Um, sure, but...” Theo’s eyes dart from Luca to me as if he’s not sure if Luca is just pretending in front of me or telling the truth.

“If it’s about her father, then she especially has the right to know. We’re not doing the whole women-have-no-business-here thing, okay? It’s outdated and stupid. Aurora isn’t my enemy.” Luca snakes his arm around my waist and pulls me close.

Theo glances at me. “All right. If you’re so sure about it.”

“For fuck’s sake, just tell us already,” Luca says.

“Marcello is on the move. His men have been seen everywhere, even very close to the borders of his territory. There are five groups. It’s as if they’re searching for something,” Theo says.

“They’re looking for me.” I have no doubt about it.

My father must be furious and out of his mind. He’s either sent everyone out there to find me and kill me or wants me dragged home so he can marry me off to someone. Either way, my fate would be terrible. At least he doesn’t suspect anything.

“But that doesn’t make any sense,” Theo says. “Marcello knows you’re here, right? Marya knows, so he knows.”

“Maybe not,” Luca says. “Marya is playing her own game, just like she’s always done. She’s going to trick Marcello and he won’t even know it. She’s pretending to be his partner, but then she’ll stab him in the back and take what she wants.”
