“We’ll find someone to get the job done,” Alessandro says. “Brando and I, I mean. Let us handle everything, and you go back to your girlfriend and your child. The news is a lot to process for both Aurora and you. You should be with her. Figure things out. Family always comes first.”
I furrow my brow.
Family. I’m going to have my own family, and it’s such a weird feeling that I’m not sure what to do with it.
“You can’t just cut me out of everything,” I say. “I can handle both family and business. Trust me.”
Or at least I hope I can. It’s not like I’ve ever tried it before.
“Okay, but Brando and I will take care of Cole Jr,” Alessandro says.
I don’t like it when I’m not in charge, but I trust Alessandro. And I really need to talk to Aurora. If she hasn’t already tried to run away from me.
It’s a surprise she didn’t start screaming for help as soon as I told her about the mafia, but maybe she was just in shock and tired from everything.
Or maybe she lied to me again about the drunk guy. Maybe she has experience with dangerous guys like me.
“Fuck,” I say out loud.
“What?” Theo asks, and Alessandro gives me a questioning look.
“I forgot I have weapons everywhere. All over the apartment.” Within Aurora’s reach.
She could hurt herself and it would be all my fault.
“I have to go,” I say.
“I’ll keep in touch,” Alessandro says.
I hurry out of the room and Theo runs after me.
“Do you think she’s going to try to kill you and claim it was an accident? Do I have to call for backup?” he asks.
“Are you out of your fucking mind? She could accidentally fire the gun! Hurt herself and the baby!”
“Okay, sure. But think about it! If she was sent here to destroy you—”
“She would’ve come with her own gun and shot me already. She wouldn’t need my gun to do it.”
“She would if she wanted to claim she was innocent and that an accident happened. Then she’d become the leader because of the child in her belly. If there’s even a child.”
I stop and glare at him. “She said we could go to a doctor together. Mentioned a paternity test too. It’s real, Theo. The baby is real.”
“Maybe that’s exactly what she wants! Maybe she poked a hole in all the condoms. You said Marcello is patient. Maybe she’ll lull you into a false sense of security, and then she’ll strike. Put poison in your drink or something.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Okay, maybe that’s a little too much, but someone has to think about it. We need to make sure she’s not dangerous and that she doesn’t want to destroy you. You want to be a father? That’s awesome. Congratulations, man. But let’s make sure everything will be as you expect. No surprises. Just because Aurora told you a few things doesn’t mean you know everything about her.”
Maybe he’s right. I want to trust Aurora more than anything. I don’t want everything to turn out to be a lie.
My fucking life started with a lie and a fake mother. Aurora and I met with more or less fake identities. It’s time for some honesty and trust. I’m sick of all the lies.
Except, how am I going to tell Aurora that I just agreed with my cousin to kill a man I don’t even know? She won’t understand. She’ll think I’m a monster and hate me for it.
“What’s wrong?” Theo asks. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. All I want is that you give me the okay to look into Aurora for you. I just want you to be safe.”
“No, it’s not that.” I’m just not the right man for someone like Aurora, and now she’s stuck with me.
