I nod. “I was working as a waitress, but then I got fired. My friend tried to cheer me up, so we went out. I lived out my fantasies with you, but it was time for me to go back to my cold, hard reality. I wanted to move on because I thought I was crazy for wanting things I couldn’t have. I had a job interview scheduled too. But then I got sick and couldn’t go. I found out I was pregnant. My landlord kicked me out because I couldn’t pay the rent.”
At least some of what I’m telling him is true. Ididwant to move on, but it just wasn’t possible. Was it fate? Or should I not believe in something like that?
“Why didn’t you tell me anything? I have more than enough money,” he says.
“I couldn’t. What would you have thought about me then? That I’m just another girl after your money?”
“Aurora...”
“I thought I could do it on my own.”
“Yeah, I get that, but I still wish you had let me help you earlier. Who hit you? Will you tell me now?” His jaw is tense.
“It was just a drunk guy at the bar where I worked. He was completely wasted. I didn’t want you to worry about it.” I hope he won’t ask me about the bar or go check if I really worked there, but Julia told me about a really trashy bar that changes waitresses very often and doesn’t keep any records of most of them.
“Fuck.” He runs his hand over his face. “I should’ve—”
“No. It’s fine. But what now? What happens with us? I need to know what your plans are.”
“My plans?” His forehead creases.
“For me and our baby. Am I just going to stay here until the baby is born or...?” I should probably come up with a plan B anyway because, no matter what Luca says now, everything can change in an instant if he finds out the truth.
But I’m pretty sure every woman would ask him that question in my situation, especially if she just discovered her baby daddy is a mafia boss.
“Yes, you’ll stay with me. And we... We’ll figure things out. I like you, and you like me, right? We’re going to have a baby. Maybe—”
A guy walks through the door and stops dead in his tracks when he sees me, his eyebrows shooting up.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “I didn’t know you weren’t alone.”
“I’m busy, Theo, as you can see,” Luca says.
“Yeah, I have eyes. But Alessandro is here, and he wants to see you. It’s urgent. I’m afraid it can’t wait.” Theo’s eyes are grave.
Something’s up. Is it about my father?
Luca glances at me and groans. “Fuck. Aurora, I’m sorry, but there’s something I need to handle. Alessandro is my cousin, and if he’s here, it’s because it’s important. Make yourself at home. If you need anything, my staff can get it for you. If you want to call me, there’s a phone in the hallway. My number is in the contacts if you need me, okay?”
I nod. “Thanks.”
He gets to his feet and starts toward me as if he’s going to kiss me, but then he stops and looks at Theo, who’s watching me with narrowed eyes as if he’s trying to read my thoughts. Luca just smiles at me and heads out with Theo.
Theo is suspicious of me, or at least it seems that way. I eat the rest of my toast and sip on my lemonade. When my stomach settles, I get to my feet.
Luca said I could look around, or at least that’s what I think he meant. I pad down the hallway, looking for security cameras, but there don’t seem to be any. Is this just one of Luca’s apartments or is this place really his home?
I don’t see any family portraits on the walls like my parents have in their house, but I guess Luca isn’t fond of his family either or he just doesn’t like portraits. There’s a spacious room full of books, but I don’t go in there.
I’ve spent too much time reading books that my mother forced on me, and I don’t have the energy or will to deal with those memories right now.
I crack open the door to another room. It’s a huge bedroom, and there’s a beautiful ornamented cabinet in it. I go closer and open it.
A gasp escapes my throat. It’s full of weapons. I reach out for one of the guns, but I pull my hand back.
What would I even do with a gun? I’ve never even held one. It would be good if I could use it to protect myself and my baby, but with my inexperience, I’m more likely to put us both in danger.
I shut the cabinet closed and look around the room. Luca has a collection of video games in one corner. My gaze falls on the photos on the desk.
