CHAPTER19

Aurora

I starearound Luca’s apartment in wonder. It’s huge. It’s at the top of a building, and it reminds me of one of those ads for modern apartments.

On the way here, I noticed the guards. They were watching me carefully and with curiosity. Their weapons are hidden under their suits jackets, but I know they have them.

The door beeped when Luca opened it, so there’s an alarm and tons of security. We should be safe here... at least until my father finds out or Luca figures out who I really am, which I hope won’t happen.

“Come.” Luca places his hand on my back and steers me into the living room. “I’ll give you the tour of the apartment later. You look like you need something to drink and eat.”

“That would be nice.” I couldn’t eat anything today because I was both too stressed and too nauseated to do it.

“What would you like? My personal cook is in the kitchen. She can make you whatever you want.”

“Um...” Having so much choice all of a sudden is overwhelming. “Maybe some lemonade and toast. Everything else makes me sick.”

His eyebrows shoot up.

“Because of the baby,” I add as I take a seat on the dark blue sofa.

“Right.” He blinks at me. “I’ll be right back.”

I guess he’s still in shock because of the news, and how wouldn’t he be? We were using protection. It shouldn’t have happened. I’m relieved that he didn’t freak out on me and send me on my way.

I wish I could tell him the full truth. But if I did that, I don’t think he’d be this nice to me. Having a baby with a regular girl isn’t that much of a big deal for a mafia boss, but having it with the daughter of his rival and worst enemy...

I can’t tell him that.

Luca returns with a big glass of lemonade and a plate full of toast. He places it all on the low table in front of me.

I take a sip of the lemonade. Luca sits down in the armchair across from me. For a while, we just stare at each other in silence.

“So we’re having a baby,” he says, unable to hide the incredulity in his voice.

“Yeah.” I nibble on the toast.

He loudly exhales.

“It’s a lot to take in. I know. It was like that for me too,” I say.

“No, it’s not that. I mean, it is. But...” His gaze holds mine. “I need to tell you something. It’s about me.”

I tense. Maybe he’s going to try to get rid of me anyway, or he’ll tell me he’s engaged or something.

“I’m not just a businessman. I’m Luca Di Domenico. My family...” He scratches the back of his head. “I’m the boss of the Di Domenico mafia.”

“Oh.” I don’t know what else to say.

“But you don’t have to be afraid of me, okay? I’ll keep you and the baby safe.” A smile stretches across his lips. “I’m only ruthless with my enemies. My mafia business won’t affect you in any way. I promise.”

I lift the lemonade glass to my lips to hide my reaction. This isn’t going to end well, is it? But I don’t have a choice. I have to keep pretending.

“Why did you lie to me about law school?” he asks. “Is Aurora your real name?”

“Yeah. Aurora O’Conners.” It’s the name on the fake ID Julia got me, and she also had some guy make fake records of me. “And I lied because... Well, because my life wasn’t happy. I thought we wouldn’t see each other again, so I came up with a nice little fantasy of who I wanted to be. I hope you’re not mad.”

“No, I’m not. Everyone wants to be someone else from time to time.”
