“I have to go. We’ll talk some other time. We need to get as much info about Marcello as possible. Killing him before he makes any moves is still our best option, but we need to know where he is.” I get to my feet.
“Where is he going?” Brando asks as I rush for the door.
“No idea,” Alessandro says.
I break into a run. I need to get to Purple Pleasure before Aurora disappears on me again. Why is she back? Is that a part of her plan?
I don’t know, but I need to see her.
* * *
The moment I see her, relief shakes my whole body. I rush to her without thinking, without worrying about who she might be. It’s the look on her face that has me wrapping her tightly into my embrace.
Dark circles are under her eyes, which are filled with way too much anguish. Her face is pale, and her smile is completely unconvincing.
“Aurora,” I whisper into her ear as I hold her close to me, unwilling to let her go.
If she’s tricked me, I want to pretend that it’s not true for a little longer. I want her to be my Aurora and no one else.
“What happened?” I ask, finally pulling away from her so I can take another good look at her.
“Um, we need to talk. In private.” She glances around.
“Yeah, sure. Come.” I take her hand, and we go to our room.
Aurora stops in the middle of the room, wringing her hands and biting her lower lip as her gaze meets mine. “I have to tell you something. I... I lied to you.”
“Lied to me about what?”
“I’m not a student. I’m kind of... homeless right now.” She curls her fingers. “And there’s something else. I’m pregnant.”
“What?” My jaw hits the floor as I jerk back.
“I’m pregnant,” she repeats, but I heard her the first time.
I just...
Fuck.
I rake my hand through my hair. Aurora is pregnant. If she’s here, that means only one thing. The baby is mine.
I’m going to be a father.
“But how? We used protection.” I need to make sure she’s not playing a game with me.
She shrugs. “I guess the condom broke. But I was at the doctor’s.” A genuine soft smile spreads across her lips. “I heard our baby’s heartbeat. If you don’t believe me, we can go to the doctor together. When the baby is born, you can do a paternity test and—”
“You’re coming with me,” I say.
I can barely believe her words. The whole thing still sounds surreal, but I’ll figure it all out. Now all I care about is taking her with me and keeping her safe.
She lied to me, but I lied to her too. I’m not just a businessman. We were both pretending to be someone else, but what happened between us was real.
I know it.
I can feel it in my bones.
She and the baby are mine, and I’m not going to let anyone hurt them.
