“He has someone.”
It’s my turn to frown. How the fuck does he know that? Did Theo spill something about Aurora too?
“How do you know that?” Alessandro asks, and yeah, I’d like to hear that too.
“Oh, come on. You can see it clearly in his eyes. He’s not interested in Cole’s girl because he has a girl. Isn’t that right, Luca?”
They both turn their gazes to me.
“We’re not here to discuss my fucking love life. It’s irrelevant,” I say.
Brando’s lips spread into a grin as he elbows his brother. “See? What did I tell you? He’s in loooove.”
“I’m not,” I snap.
Especially when I have no idea if any of the moments I shared with Aurora were even real. I can’t trust my gut feeling when it comes to her. She’s thrown me off my game completely.
“Who is she?” Alessandro asks.
Wouldn’t I like to know that too?
“Let’s talk about Marcello. What if he doesn’t come for us first?” I say.
“Why wouldn’t he? You’ve been a thorn in his side for quite a while,” Brando says. “He’s doing all what he’s doing to kill you because he knows you’re going to kill him if he doesn’t get to you first.”
“But what if that’s what he wants us to think? Marcello is a patient man. Going to war quickly with all your allies is a good idea if your enemy is unprepared, but we already know what he’s doing. The element of surprise is gone. His allies aren’t used to working with his men. Their forces might come together at us, but they won’t act as a unit or as one mind. They’ll make mistakes.”
Alessandro tilts his head. “You think he’s going to get as many allies as possible and slowly devour them one by one, combining them with his own forces until they solely follow his orders.”
“Yes. That’s why he’s not allying with anyone powerful enough to stand up to him.”
Alessandro scratches his chin. “That would be a problem.”
“You knew all this and you didn’t even want to consider Cole’s offer?” Brando shakes his head at me. “If you’re right, we need to find allies too. Does your girlfriend come from a good mafia family?”
Alessandro shoots him a glare. “Mafia princesses don’t just stroll into another mafia boss’ territory as if nothing.”
“You’re saying he’s like us and wants to marry outside the mafia.”
“Obviously.”
“Well, fuck then.” Brando shrugs. “Maybe you can make a deal with your girlfriend. She might let you marry a mafia princess—”
“I don’t have a girlfriend! Why are we even talking about this?”
“Because who you fall in love with or don’t fall in love with matters,” Alessandro says.
A knock sounds on the door, and I’m grateful for the interruption.
“Come in,” I say.
Theo appears in the doorway. “She’s at the club!”
I don’t have to ask to know who he’s talking about.
Aurora.
Aurora showed up.
