“Then don’t go missing. Leave a note for your family to find. Say you don’t want to get married, which is absolutely true. They definitely won’t assume someone broke into the house without any of the guards noticing or the alarms going off and forced you to write that note before kidnapping you. Your father won’t be looking for you at Luca’s. That’s for sure.”

“Okay, so let’s say I manage to fool my father. What about Luca? He’ll have tons of questions.”

“I’ll get in touch with some friends. Get you a fake ID and everything. All Luca needs to know is that he’s your baby’s father. The rest doesn’t matter. He’ll keep you safe.”

“What if Luca and my father go to war? Or if my father sends an assassin to take out Luca?”

“If the assassin thing worked, your father would’ve killed Luca a long time ago,” Julia says. “That just won’t happen. And a war... Well, that’s always a possibility, but you won’t be a part of it. Luca will take you somewhere safe. His men and your father’s men will fight. You and your baby will be fine. I’m sure Luca has many hideouts. He wouldn’t put the mother of his child at risk.”

“What if Luca rejects me? What if he doesn’t want to be a father? Maybe he’s supposed to marry some mafia princess, and he won’t want anyone to find out about me. What if he locks me up and takes away my child? What if—?”

“Aurora, breathe.” Julia places her hands on my shoulders. “Everything’s going to be okay. Luca cares about you. He wouldn’t have waited for you to show up, and you wouldn’t have fallen for him if he wasn’t a good guy.”

“But I didn’t know he was a mafia boss!”

“Well, if he turns out to be a bad guy after all, you’ll have to escape. Maybe it’ll be easier to run away from him than from your father. But let’s not think about that. No negative thoughts. It’s not good for the baby.” Julia waves her hand as if warding off bad spirits.

“What if he just kills me as soon as I tell him?”

“He won’t. If there’s one thing I know about mafia guys, it’s that they care about their offspring. It’s all about continuing the line and all that. Even if he doesn’t want to recognize your child officially, he’ll want to have it. Just in case.”

I sigh. This isn’t the kind of life that I want for my child. I don’t want him or her to be a pawn in the mafia world. I don’t want my baby to suffer what I have suffered. I don’t want my baby to experience the fear and pain that come with being born into the mafia.

If I lie to Luca, and he finds out the truth one day...

I don’t even want to think about it. But Julia is right. I don’t have a choice. I can’t stay in this house, and I can’t run away on my own. Not without any money or help. And I can’t ask Julia to abandon her life and risk everything so she could come with me and keep me company.

I’ll have to go to Luca and hope for the best. Maybe he’s really a good guy, and he’ll be nice to me just like he was at Purple Pleasure or that restaurant.

“Just get me out of this house,” I say.

“I will.” Julia gives me a big hug, and we just stand like that for a few long moments. “I don’t know how I’ll let you go on your own. I want to come with you.”

“No, Julia. You can’t. I don’t want to ruin your life too. You need to make sure no one finds out about your involvement in all this.”

Sadness dances in her eyes as her gaze meets mine. “I know, but... it’s not fair!”

I can agree with that. “We’ll be fine.”

I need to convince myself that everything’s going to be okay. Otherwise, I don’t know how I’m going to survive all this. My life has been turned upside down, and there’s nothing that can return it to the way it was.

CHAPTER18

Luca

Alessandro and Brandosit down across from me, and since the two of them are both in my office right now, I know things are not looking good at the moment.

“So you heard the news,” I say. “Marcello and Cole are going to ally.”

“Yes,” Alessandro says. “And that’s a big problem. We should be preparing for war. I doubt Marcello will wait to attack. He’ll want to catch us unprepared. We can’t let that happen.”

“Actually,” Brando says, his gray-blue eyes trained on me, “we should just figure out where the wedding will be held and kill them all.”

Alessandro glances at his brother, his lips tightly pressed together.

“I’d love to just kill them all,” I say. “But that’s not going to be easy. The wedding will probably be held in Marcello’s territory. It wouldn’t surprise me if Marcello’s forces arrive immediately after he signs the deal with Cole, and they set up camp at our border.”

“Then we have to act quickly,” Brando says, raking his hand through his dark brown hair. “We should gather our best men, sneak into Marcello’s territory, and wait for the wedding.”
