“It’s Marya,” I say. “She’s trying to scare me. Find out how the fuck she sent the message. It shouldn’t be possible.”
“Run or die? What the fuck? Why would she send that? Is it a warning?”
“It’s nothing. She wants to unsettle us. It won’t work.”
“Maybe we can use the message to track her down,” Theo says.
“We can try, but I doubt it’ll lead us anywhere. She wants us to waste time chasing all the wrong leads.”
Marya is a lot of things, but she’s not careless. She has a lot of nerve getting in touch with me like this. It’s the first time she sends me a message, and it’s a threat. Figures.
But I don’t care about Marya’s games. I want to know who the hell Aurora is as soon as possible. Maybe her friend, Julia, is the one I should focus on if Aurora doesn’t show up in any databases.
CHAPTER17
Aurora
For the next few days,I just cry. Cry and fantasize about things that can never be, like Luca coming here and saving me from my father.
But then I realize none of that is going to help me or save my baby. I have to do something, and the only way is to tell Julia what’s going on.
If I stay here and do nothing, my baby and I will die. I’m sure of it. Maybe it won’t happen right away, but as soon as my father figures out what’s going on, it’ll all be over.
I can’t let that happen.
I refuse to let that happen.
Staying will save no one, not even Julia. I haven’t seen her ever since she gave me the tests. She has to be crazy with worry and wondering what’s going on with me, but my mother has been watching my room and the hallway more than usual.
I don’t know if it’s because she can sense that something’s off with me or because she wants to make sure that I’m going to be the perfect wife for whoever my father wants me to marry this time.
I take a peek into the hallway. My mother is supposed to be away at the moment because my father needs her with him at some event, and I’m sure Julia knows about it.
I rush downstairs and into the storage room. Julia’s not there, so I race outside. The guards watch me carefully, so I pretend I’m taking a walk in the yard.
Now’s the wrong time to draw too much attention to myself. I should’ve waited for the guards to end their shifts, but I’m too impatient to do that.
Finally, Julia shows up and spots me immediately. I give her a small wave and hurry back inside. She and I can’t be seen talking. I check the hallway and scurry back into the storage room. Julia shows up a few minutes later.
“Aurora!” She throws herself at me and winds her arms around me. “Are you okay? Your mother was insufferable. She was everywhere! I swear I couldn’t even come see my mom because she immediately popped up and asked what the hell I was doing.”
“I know. I’m fine. My mother’s been watching me like a hawk.”
“And?” Julia steps away from me, her wide eyes filled with worry.
“Positive,” I whisper.
She gasps. “All of them?”
“All of them.”
“Oh, my god! What are we going to do? Does your family—?” She shakes her head. “What the hell am I talking about? Of course they don’t know. You’d be...”
“Dead.” I take a deep breath. “I know I’m asking for a lot, but I need you to do me a huge favor.”
“Anything.” She takes my hands in hers. “Just tell me what you need.”
“I need you to set up a doctor’s appointment for me and then get me out of the house.” I keep my voice as low as possible. “I need to make sure my baby’s fine.”
