“Let me guess. You have a boyfriend or maybe even a husband, and you can’t tell me.” His body tenses under mine.
“It’s not that. I don’t. I don’t have anyone.” I lift my head and meet his gaze.
“But it’s complicated?” The corners of his lips quirk up.
“Yeah, actually.”
“Okay. Then tell me whatever you want to tell me. What do you do? Do you have any hobbies? Everyone wants something in life. What is it that you want?”
“Um...” No one has ever really asked me anything like that because people in my life know that I don’t have a choice, and my parents aren’t willing to give me one.
But this is all a fantasy, right? A fantasy that will soon end. I haven’t thought much about what I wanted if I were a regular person, but I can do it now.
“I’m studying to become an attorney one day, so I don’t have much time for anything else,” I blurt out. “I want to have my own office and help people. I want to have a family with a nice guy and three kids.”
Where the hell did all that come from? But I guess, if I weren’t a mafia princess, it’s what I would be longing for.
My big dream. A dream that will remain just a fantasy because my father would never let me go to college, and he definitely wouldn’t let me have the kind of life that I want.
“An attorney?” His eyebrows shoot up. “Interesting. But you know you might have to help bad people too?”
He’s clearly messing with me because his mouth is curved up.
“I don’t know about that. I want to be successful enough to choose my own cases.”
His face grows pensive for a moment. “Then good luck with that. I’m sure you’ll make it.”
“Thanks.” If only it were possible. “What about you?”
“I’m boring. Just a businessman who spends most of the day in his office.”
I trace my finger over the scar on his chest. “Can I ask how you got these then?”
An office usually isn’t a dangerous place, and his job is far from boring if he ended up with scars because of it. Or maybe it was something else. An accident on a trip or whatever.
“Actually, it’s getting late.” All emotion disappears from his face, and his eyes become guarded.
I asked the wrong thing, didn’t I? Something bad must’ve happened to him and I brought it up like an idiot.
But he’s right about one thing. I glance at the alarm clock and my eyes widen.
“I need to go too.” I pull away from him and sit up, looking around for my clothes.
It’s so easy not to notice the time when I’m with him. But the safe fantasy bubble has just burst, and now my cold, empty reality is knocking on my door and wanting me back ASAP.
Luca watches me as he puts on his clothes. “Tomorrow? Same time, same place?”
“Um, yeah.” I don’t know if I can make it happen, but my father should still be away.
Every moment I spend with Luca is precious, and I want to cling to my fantasy for a little bit longer. I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy before, and I don’t want it to end, even though I know it must happen eventually.
But for now, Luca is mine.
My life is something different.
I’m not a mafia princess.
I’m not trapped in a golden cage.
