“What is it?”

“The woman Laticia Roma died. Before she died, she told the police everything. It would seem that she did kill her ex-fiancé. She planned to burn down the pier. She was very wealthy, like she had millions. She left everything to the children of her ex-fiancé. Isn’t that wonderful?”

“Wow! How did she die?”

“She had a heart attack. At the same time, she was confessing to what she had done. In the house the wife and six kids lived in, Laticia somehow convinced the banker to kick them out of their home. Even though they kept up with their payments, George said she had a crazy laugh the entire time she told them what she had done, and then she died.”

“Hopefully, the money will help them. I’m in shock over this entire story. Thank you for letting me know what happened.”

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow at your grand opening.”

“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I looked at Nick. “That older woman had a heart attack and died.”

“Oh, that’s too bad.”

“She left her millions to the kids of her ex-fiancé. It was her fault they lived in poverty. I hope this eases their pain. She killed their father.”

“She was crazy. I knew that when I saw her laughing with that can of gas in her hands. Her guilt must have driven her crazy.”

“Yep, I believe you’re right. I’m glad all that is over; we won’t have to worry about our businesses burning down.”

“There is that. So the house is all locked up for the night, and Julia is sound asleep. Why don’t we go to bed?”

“I thought you would never ask. I would love to go to bed with my husband.”

Nick laughed out loud and carried me up the stairs and to our room, where he showed me how much he loved me.

RYKER

Ididn’t mean to be grumpy all the time, especially not around my Seal buddies. But I’ve been angry since my fiancée humiliated me in front of all of them, running off with her boss the day before we were supposed to get married. The only reason I was so angry was because I allowed it to happen. Hell, I’m not a child; I’m thirty-seven. The more I thought about how I felt, the more I realized I was furious because I was humiliated, not because my heart was as broken as I thought it should have been.

I knew most of the people who lived in my town, and they were all invited. The wedding would be big and on the beach. Janet’s mother called and told me she had run off. She didn’t have the nerve to tell me herself. The entire town was coming to our wedding, so they all knew what had happened. I’ve lived in this town my whole life. It was challenging walking down the street without everyone whispering. I heard them: ‘Here comes Ryker Malone, the poor guy. I can’t believe his fiancée ran off with another man.’ I couldn’t bear it; the humiliation.

I got over the hurt within the first few months. The anger stayed longer… Much longer. Does that mean I was lucky I didn’t marry Janet? Hell, yes, it does!
