I’d never been this close to an alpha before. Sure, Alvaro had hugged me, but I could easily have escaped. But this? My mind and body had gone to a different place, nearly forgetting about why I’d come upstairs in the first place.
Ignoring me, he slid his lips along my jaw and stopped at the corner of my mouth. “This can’t be real.”
The dog, Kara. Remember the dog.
“Stop! Gizmo is dying.” I squirmed, but not trying to get closer to him. I was trying to get away. “We need to go to the vet.”
He pulled back, snapping out of the trance he was in. “What? Kayla?” He jumped up, his face looking like he’d just seen something life-altering.
“I’m Kara.” I put my hand over my heart. “The dog. He ate my whole pack of suppressants.”
He blinked at me several times, confusion on his face before picking his shirt up off the floor. “Where?”
“Downstairs,” I choked, wiggling my weight off the beanbag.
He looked down at me and narrowed his eyes. “Why are you in our house? Is Kayla here?”
Before I could answer, he ran down the hall. I managed to get up and go after him, hoping we had time. Payne had only had me pinned for about a minute, but that minute could have cost Gizmo his life.
I could barely see as I made it downstairs just as Payne got to Gizmo. He made a strangled sound as he dropped down beside him, only his head visible over the back of the couch.
“Alvaro!” Payne yelled, and I jumped at the sudden call for the leader of the pack.
He picked Gizmo up, the dog’s head hanging limp. He was still panting but had no energy left in his body. I covered my mouth to stop the sounds of my sobs from escaping.
Alvaro flew down the stairs, his eyes widening in fear as soon as he saw the dog. “How did this happen? Shit. Tate!” He ran back up the stairs, yelling for Tate to get his clothes on.
I followed Payne down another staircase and into an entertainment area that I could hardly see through my tears. He headed down another hall, and before he got to the door at the end, it opened, and we all jumped nearly ten feet in the air.
“What the fuck, Avery?” Cal looked from the dog to me and then back to the dog. “What’s wrong?”
“Gizzy is sick.” Payne tried to move past Cal, but he held up a black helmet to block the way. “Move out of the fucking way.”
“Did you take your sleep meds?” Cal lowered his voice, but I still could hear him.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It does.” Cal backs up into the garage. “I’ll drive. Did you wake-”
“We’re coming!” Alvaro yelled from down the hall, yanking a shirt over his head. “What happened?”
“Ask her.” Payne walked quickly to the back of a smaller SUV.
Cal put his helmet on the ground and entered a code into a metal box hanging by the door. It had several keys hanging on hooks, and he pulled out a pair. He unlocked the doors and then grabbed a pair of flip-flops from a shelf. “I take it you two are going to deal with Kayla?”
“I’m Kara.” I wrapped my arms around myself, feeling helpless.
He didn’t pay me any mind as he hit a button to open the garage door and rushed to the SUV to help Payne get the dog in the back. I stood back as Tate and Alvaro came out of the house in various states of undress. Tate just had his clothes gathered against his chest, and Alvaro was buttoning his jeans.
Tate went to the shelves and threw a pair of flip-flops at me. “You can stay here or go with us.”
I let them hit me and then slid my feet into them. “I’m going.”
I ran to the SUV, getting in the back with Payne and the dog. He glared at me but didn’t say a word as Cal hopped in the driver’s seat, started the car, and started backing out while Alvaro and Tate were still putting on their pants.
“Wait! What about-”
“They can take another car.” Cal backed up far enough so he could turn and drive forward toward the gate which was already opening. “Where’s your sister?”
