Until I heard, “Oh, and, Rayne?”
“Yeah?”
“Keep your garage open for me, and I want you naked when I get there.”
And with that, he ended the call.
THIRTEEN
RAYNE
I wavedat my new friends as I headed for the table at one of our favorite restaurants to meet for lunch.
Vivian Stern and Delaney St. James were my partners in the Women in Law program, started by the mayor, Nadine Evans.
While I worked as a prosecutor for the county, Vivian was a lawyer in the private sector, and Delaney was a family court judge. Nadine had wanted lawyers with a variety of jobs to let young women know that there was more than one option when going into the field.
As far as I knew, the three of us were only doing this for one school year, and next year, Nadine planned to recruit different lawyers, which made sense. The three of us were just the tip of the iceberg of what one could do with a law degree.
And while it took time out of my already-busy schedule, I really liked going to schools and talking to the kids. Plus, I’d made two new friends in the process.
The three of us weren’t visiting a school today. We were simply getting together for lunch.
“Hey, ladies,” I said as I took a seat next to Delaney in the booth. “Sorry I’m late.”
“It’s fine,” Vivian said. “We already ordered your usual for you.”
I grinned and picked up the water that was sitting in front of me to take a sip. “Thank you.”
Vivian had messaged me and asked me what I wanted when I told her I was running behind.
“You look very happy this morning,” Delaney said, leaning back and scanning me from head to toe.
“Do I?” I smiled coyly. “Maybe it’s because I’m free of my ex.”
The two of them had watched me be unhappy with my relationship for months. The last time I’d seen them, I had just broken up with Brett, so my emotions had still been a little raw. But today, I was more than glad we’d broken up.
“Nah.” Delaney shook her head. “You met someone and had sex this weekend. You look like you’ve been thoroughly fucked. Something I never saw you as when you were dating your ex. No wonder you’re so happy.”
I laughed. “Delaney, do all judges talk like that?”
She shrugged and smiled. “I don’t know because I only see them at work, and I certainly don’t speak like this at work.”
“Are you trying to avoid the question?” Vivian asked me.
I frowned. “What question? Delaney didn’t ask me anything.”
While technically true, I knew exactly what Vivian had meant. And when we’d first met, Vivian would have avoided all bedroom talk. But since she’d started dating her boyfriend, Dominick, she had loosened up a little.
Vivian rolled her eyes. “Tell me you’re having lunch with a lawyer without telling me you’re having lunch with a lawyer.” She narrowed her eyes but couldn’t stop the smile from crossing her face. “You know what I’m talking about.”
“Yeah,” Delaney said. “Did you have sex this weekend or not? Spill.”
I looked at them both and was quite tempted to tell them all about Cade since they didn’t know him or my brother, but I didn’t. I would have to tell them about the bet and why my ex had broken up with me. I knew neither of these women would make me feel bad and would probably be outraged on my behalf, but it didn’t lessen my embarrassment.
Especially when Vivian was in a new relationship with a very sexy man who made her incredibly happy—in and out of the bedroom. And while Delaney was single, I had recently met her ex-husband, who still looked at her like she was the most delicious meal he’d ever had when she wasn’t looking. If he wanted her that much after they were divorced, I was sure the sex between them when they had been happy was out of this world.
“I hate to break it to you, ladies, but I did not meet anyone this weekend.” It wasn’t a lie. I shrugged. “I think I’m out of the post-breakup slump.”
