RAYNE

When I finally pulled myselffrom my bed on Sunday afternoon, Cade had sent me a text, telling me he had gone into work and that he hadn’t wanted to wake me, so I hadn’t been completely ditched.

It was kind of sweet, but I also wondered if he needed to take a step back from me because I didn’t see him the rest of the day. He’d seemed so possessive of me, yet he’d made it clear in the beginning that we weren’t going to fall in love with each other.

But I figured whatever issues Cade had, he needed to deal with them. I was going to enjoy sex with him, then hopefully find someone who wanted to be in a relationship.

I also hadn’t heard back from him since I’d replied to his text about him going into work, so when my phone vibrated on my desk on Monday morning, I picked it up, wondering if it was him. I had no idea when we were getting together next, and while I didn’t mind him calling the shots, it would be nice to know what was going on.

But it turned out to be my brother.

Beau:What did you do the rest of the weekend?

Kind of an odd question. But before I could answer, he sent another text.

Beau:I didn’t hear from you after you left the restaurant, and then I drove by Cade’s house on Saturday, and your car was there.

Oh shit.

Cade and I hadn’t thought that through, especially since he lived close to my brother and Em.

Panicking, I quickly called Cade because I didn’t know what to say, and I knew my brother could see I had already read his messages.

I just hoped Cade answered since he was probably at work. After three rings, I was beginning to think he wouldn’t.

“Hey, Rayne,” he greeted me. “What’s up?”

He sounded normal. Maybe he wasn’t worried about how things were between us.

A door closed in the background, and I figured he had gone into his office.

“Beau just texted me and mentioned my car was in your driveway on Saturday.”

“What did you say?” Cade did not seem as worried as I was about what my brother had seen.

“Nothing yet. I don’t know what to say.”

“Tell him the truth.”

“What? You want me to tell him we fucked?”

Cade groaned, but it came across as more of aI’m in painkind of groan rather than ayou’re frustratingmegroan.

“No. Tell him we went to lunch and you came to my work with me for a bit because it’d been a long time since you’d been here.”

“You don’t think he’ll think it’s suspicious?”

“He already does think that.”

I bit my lip. “True.”

“Besides, we’re friends. I can hang out with you without Beau around.”

We usually didn’t, but he wasn’t wrong.

“You’re right. He’ll only get more suspicious if I act suspicious.”

“Text him back and let me know what he says. From now on, you can park in my garage when you spend the night.”
