“I guess I deserve that.” He squeezed his cousin’s elbow. “Speaking of busy, I’m meeting someone for lunch, but I really would like to get together and meet this guy of yours.”
“I’ll call you,” Vivian said.
Hugh said good-bye, and she slipped back into her seat.
“Did you hear that, Rayne? My cousin is single.”
Delaney elbowed me. “Maybe the universe heard you.” She looked at Vivian. “You should invite him to the party since Rayne is going to be there.”
“Great idea. I might actually look forward to the event.” Vivian, who’d needed to be convinced by Dominick to have the party in the first place, looked at me. “Hugh’s an investment banker, and his ex-girlfriend used to brag about how good he was in bed.”
My eyes followed the direction Hugh had gone, and I watched as he sat across the table from another man. Vivian’s cousin was good-looking and seemed nice. He wasn’t as sexy as Cade, but once my month with him was up, I would need to move on. Someone Vivian knew and trusted might not be a bad place to start.
“Do you think he’d even be interested in me?” I asked Vivian. I didn’t want to put her on the spot, but as a thinner woman, she probably didn’t always think about how guys felt about someone who looked like me. “Because if all his exes are skinny, I can already tell you, he’s not going to be.”
“Nope. Hugh’s never dated a skinny woman in his life. According to him, he likes his girlfriends to have meat on their bones.” Vivian smiled. “Think about it.”
“I think I will.”
FOURTEEN
RAYNE
I scowled down at Rayne.“You’re not naked.”
She laughed. “I just got home from work.”
“That’s probably a good thing because I need you to take everything off but your underwear.”
She laughed, and it made me smile.
“What’s so funny?”
“It reminded me of something at lunch today.”
My eyebrows arched. “What in the world happened at lunch that made you think of getting naked?” An image of Rayne having lunch with some handsome lawyer guy had me frowning. I stepped closer and pulled her to me. “Or maybe the better question is,Who were you having lunch with?”
She placed her hands on my chest. “I had lunch with Vivian and Delaney. They’re—”
“I know who they are,” I said as I relaxed.
Rayne blinked up at me. “You do?”
I scratched my head. Maybe I didn’t. “I thought they were part of your Women Doing Law thing.”
“It’s Women in Law, but, yes, that’s who they are.”
I grinned. “Then, I was right.”
She shook her head as the corners of her mouth slowly turned up. “You…surprise me.”
“How so?”
“I dated Brett for over a year, and you don’t remember a single thing about him. I’ve been doing the Women in Law thing for a few months, and you haven’t even met Delaney or Vivian, yet you remember.” She chuckled. “Maybe I’m more baffled than surprised.”
There was nothing to be baffled about. Brett was a pissant. I had remembered him, but I had told Rayne I didn’t the other night because he wasn’t good enough for her. I was glad they’d broken up, and it had nothing to do with our little agreement to help each other.
“Speaking of surprises, I have something for you.”
