“Right. They probably didn’t even tell you yet! Answer me this: What kind of situation have you got there?”
“Situation? Emily, you are not making any sense!”
“So you’re not going to answer me?” she challenges me.
I stare at myself in the mirror and shake my head, hoping some combination of words is going to make sense. I am completely confused.
“I’m happy to answer you, Emily,” I begin calmly. “Just back up. What do you mean bysituation?”
“I should’ve known it was weird! Who just moves in with three guys? Who does that?”
“Somebody whose roommate kicks her out and makes her? You didn’t leave me a lot of choices,” I remind her.
“So this is my fault?”
I am so confused, I feel like I’m going to throw up.
“Emily! Can you just slow down? I am really trying to understand what you are saying here…”
“You can’t tell me you are just a nanny,” she hisses accusingly.
I shrug at my reflection in the mirror. I think that we definitely established I am just the nanny yesterday, I remind myself.
“That’s my job,” I reply calmly. “I take care of children, Emily. Three of them. And you were right, I’m good at. So, thank you for that.”
There. Case closed. That should make her happy. Can I go get my coffee now?
“Well, it sure sounds like they are looking to replace you, Jolene,” she sniffs.
“What are you talking about?”
“Did they even invite you to Ireland?”
“Ireland?” I reply, suddenly loud.
“That’s what it says!”
“That is whatwhatsays?”
“Their Tinder profile!”
“Tinder? How did you… What do you… Wait, you’re onTinder?”
“Never mind about that!” she snaps.
Okay, I can’t do this right now. I’ve got like seven working brain cells, and they are all threatening to shut right back down again.
“Okay. You saw something on Tinder,” I summarize slowly. “Can you just send it to me? Like a screenshot or something?”
“Well… A screenshot? How do I…”
“There is probably a Share button,” I yawn. “Just click that. Just send it to me. Just… Let me get back to you. After coffee.”
I hear her making noises of uncertainty, but I am pretty sure she’s going to do it.
“Okay, I am sorry that I woke you up,” she grumbles.
“Don’t worry about it. Just send it to me.”
