“Yeah, you see it,” she finished smugly. “Now, don’t do it! Promise me!”
“I just… I mean… I don’t…”
“Close enough!” she cut me off.
Shuffling forward on her very high heels, she put out her hands toward Cole and made kissing noises at him.
“Sweetie, Amber’s gotta go, okay?” she said, referring to herself in the third person.
Cole nodded, but looked over her shoulder at me suspiciously. She glanced over her shoulder too and winked at me.
“Oh, no, you’re gonna love her!” Amber reassured him. “We understand each other.”
For another moment, Cole inspected me, then seemed to shrug it off.
In my arms, Harmony gave a great big yawn, her eyes half-closed.
“Alexis, sweetie, let’s go see about dinner! Okay?”
Alexis waved her hand at me, acknowledging my presence politely, and also signaling that she was cool with coming back. She seemed like a complicated and intelligent little girl, kind of like her mother.
“See you soon,” Alexis called out.
“Um, okay, sweetie,” I called after her, remembering to smile.
Amber and Alexis left, and I just stood there in the kitchen for a few minutes with Cole and Harmony, who had fallen completely asleep and suddenly weighed more like sixty pounds in my arms.
“You know what, little dude?” I finally said out loud. “We are gonna be okay. We are. Right?”
“Wee Wee Wee! All the way home!” he grinned.
Chapter 6
BOONE
Imade the deal with Ambrose, not knowing how hard it was going to be. This is fucking ridiculous.
It isn’t getting any easier. I thought it would be one of those things where, you know, you see some girl and she’s got an ass likethat, and tits likethat, and thighs likethat, and you’re like, fuck.
But you don’t.
And after a while, there’s always another girl. Or there’s a game on, or, you know, stuff happens.
But it’s not like that with Jolene.
First of all, she’s amazing with the kids. Was that supposed to make me like her? I didn’t know that.
But it does.
Second of all, she smells good. She’s hot as fuck, of course. Long hair, bouncy, round tits, and those tiny little skirts she wears all the time. It would be so fucking easy to just bend her over and spread her out on the back of the sofa.
But she smells… amazing. Like wildflowers or something. Like food. That’s the part that gets me. There are a lot of girls who you can bend over, and you manage not to, right?
But this is fucking impossible.
Cole thinks she’s amazing. Every day he’s got some new rhyme or something. He’s getting smart.
He started drawing pictures of everything. She got him a sketchbook. He carries it around. He just follows her like a baby duck, and when she stops, he sits right down on the floor and starts drawing, like, anything. Like whatever is in front of him.
