"We don't know much, but there are things going on here, and if we come, we could bring more danger to you. I can't risk you or the baby." I confirm what Fiona said. I don’t want to share too much information because I don’t know how secure her mobile is.

"What do you mean 'we'?" Kayla gasps.

"Kayla, don't worry. I'm safe and protected. I love you and I'll be in touch soon." Fiona hangs up the phone before she clings to me. I hold her tight as she cries. After a moment, she pulls away. “Tell me what happened.”

I take her hand and lead her over to Lex’s laptop. She looks at the image.

“I’ve been getting notes like this for months now. I don’t know who they are from.”

“How long?” My body locks up. He found her months ago.

“I started getting them in November. Here.” She picks up her phone and clicks around for a moment before turning it toward me. She shows me image after image of the notes. All similar to this one.

“Just the notes? Nothing else?” I ask, and she shakes her head.

“I’ve felt someone watching me, but there’s been nothing else but the notes.”

“Call Seamus and meet me in the office in twenty. Fiona, stay here for the day until I can get this figured out. I’m taking your mobile with me.” I pocket it and lean down to kiss her softly on the lips. “I’ll make you safe again, no matter what happens.”

“I trust you, Aidan.” She grips the lapels of my jacket, wanting a deeper kiss, but I can’t focus on anything but the fact she’s in danger.

I make my way out the door with Shane and Lex following me.

“Shane, I want guards increased around the compound. She doesn’t go anywhere without a full detail.”

“On it, boss.”

Chapter Nine

Fiona

I come awake after tossing and turning all night long. Aidan never came home last night, and I didn’t see him at all after he left me. I know he’s concerned about this Sir person, but I don’t even know who that is or why he would come after me. I roll from the bed and make my way to the shower where I get ready for the day. I’m going to hunt him down and find out what is going on. I’m tired of everyone thinking I’m a weak little girl.

I enter the kitchen in the hope he’s there waiting for me, but he isn’t. No one is around. I haven’t seen any of the guys, and I’m frustrated because it feels like he’s pushing me away. He constantly told me before that he didn’t want to put me in danger. From what I heard yesterday, it sounds like a man was poisoned because of me. I pull out the platter of pastries I made yesterday to break the boredom. I put several on a plate along with a thermos of coffee I made for him.

I walk through the side door, noticing all the guns and weapons on the walls as I make my way to the exit. I open the door and see a pathway leading to the garage. There are guards walking the fence line and moving around the grounds. I notice another path that goes behind the garage. I’ve watched from the back patio as Aidan has moved along this path over the last several days. There’s a gate in the fence that leads to the property next to it. I make my way through it when a guard stops me.

“Where are you heading, Ms. Griffin?” His voice is gruff, but he smiles at me as I step back from him.

“I wanted to surprise Aidan with breakfast.” I hold up the goodies.

“I’ll let him know you are on your way.”

“I wanted to surprise him. Can you just point the way?”

“Yes, ma’am. Go through those back doors. His office is at the front.” He points at the back of another house that is smaller than the other but still huge.

I make my way across the lawn and through the doors. I step into a garden room and then another large kitchen. I wonder why he has two houses. I hear raised voices and make my way through the dining-family room combination just like at the house he lives in. This house doesn’t have the touches of people living in it. The decorations are neutral and plain. I enter a large hall and the voices rise again.

“I knew she wouldn’t be able to be in my world.” Aidan’s voice drops as someone says something. “I told you the only way she’ll be safe is away from here. Take her to my father’s place in the country.” His voice is hoarse sounding. He stayed here all night because he doesn’t want to be with me. The other person says something, but again I can’t understand it. “It has to be this way. She’ll be safer away from me.”

Everything in me crumbles. I back up with my hand to my mouth so the sobs don’t come out. I need to get away from here. As I walk back through the dining room, I set the goodies down and then move back through the house. I’m almost to the gate when the guard stops me again.

“Everything okay, Ms. Griffin?”

I stop and look at him. No, it will never be okay again. The man I love just pushed me away. Oh my God! I love him.

“I’m fine.” I continue back through, but I don’t go into the house. I stand on the patio and stare through the glass doors into the kitchen I thought would be mine one day. The home I was trying to make for us while he was trying to find a way to get away from me. He only wanted my virginity, not me.
