“Cabinet at your knees.” His voice held a hint of a smile.
“Maple syrup or berries?” I tossed out my next thought as the image of a carton of blueberries I’d seen seconds before in the fridge registered in my brain.
“Syrup.”
I hurried on itchy feet to gather a mixing bowl, a whisk, plates and forks.
Loaf of bread—check.
Butter—check.
Frying pan for the bacon…that should have been done first since it would take the longest.
I lit the stove’s flame, focusing on peeling off strips of bacon from the pack and lying them in the heating pan.
Perfect.
Now…bread.
Already got that—
“Sky.”
I jerked around, having forgotten I wasn’t alone in the kitchen.
Ashton grinned at me, holding out a mug of coffee.
“How did I…never mind.” Face flaming over my absentmindedness, I took his offering and sipped the blonde, steaming liquid. Perfectly sweet. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” His eyes glowed in a way that tingled arousal through my entire body, and my mind went back to the feel of his thickness pushing into my body and how I’d stretched to accommodate his girth.
An achingly sweet shiver rolled over me.
“Bacon,” Ash murmured, pulling my focus back to the present—and his smile.
“Oh shit.” I spun, the sizzle of fat and scent of bacon registering to my senses.
I used a pair of tongs to flip the bacon and ignored the eyes I could feel on my back in order to get the rest of our breakfast started.
“You said you’ve never been medically diagnosed with ADHD?” Ash asked, and I shook my head.
“My parents focused their attention on Nora, the gifted twin, since I just drove them nuts. She got all the brains, leaving me with close to none.”
“I think you’re incredibly intelligent,” Ash argued, and I huffed my disagreement. “Perhaps not book smarts, but you’re intuitive. Sensitive to other souls. Your empathy and the natural desire to soothe others is more important to me than straight A’s or any college degree.”
“I’ll bet Rhett doesn’t feel the same though, does he?” I asked with a slight frown, my wrist flying as I whisked the eggs into a froth of yellow.
Ash didn’t answer right away, confirming my suspicions.
“How did Missing Link match us when Rhett and I are total opposites?” I asked, insecurity brewing in my stomach alongside the coffee.
“Because our profile showed what I desired—an angel to give us what we both need.”
Children and emotional release.
But what about love—was that on the table? And if not, would I be content to have a piece of Ashton’s heart and not Rhett’s? Was my first adventure in a menage a one and done? What if Rhett wasn’t interested in any part of me, simply wanted a physical relationship?
My shoulders tensed as I shook cinnamon into the egg mixture, remembering what Nora had told me about being a third wheel. “Is there even room in your relationship for another person, Ashton? Or am I wasting my time dreaming about dark-haired knights on white horses and happily ever afters?”
