Before I could respond, Ava hushed everyone and turned up the TV that is mounted in the corner of the kitchen.
As we all turned to face the TV, the newscaster is saying that a small casino was robbed. It was the third robbery in two months. There was a convenient store, a cash advance store and now this. The newscaster then went to an interview with Detective Blair Connors. Oh my gosh! He worked on Grayson’s case with Ava’s company. That man is sex on a stick! For months I would dream about him, but I knew that was all it would be, just dreams. That man would never consider dating someone like me.
“It doesn’t sound like Detective Connors has any leads,” Ava said. “That casino luckily wasn’t a major one. They could have possibly gotten away with so much more or maybe not because of the security. However, it really looks like the robbers are ramping up to rob something big.”
“Babe, you know I love you and I love that you are dedicated to your job and to protect others, but can we not discuss shop at the breakfast table! You know I like meal time to be family time and not involve work!” Grayson said with a laugh.
“You know this stuff gets me excited,” Ava replied in a seductive voice.
“Maybe you two should take this conversation back upstairs,” Dottie said laughing.
“Sorry, Dottie,” Grayson apologized for him and Ava.
You can always tell in his voice when he talks to Dottie how much of a mother figure, she is to him. It is so sweet to watch their interactions. Being an orphan myself, I wish I had a mother figure like Dottie in my life, but that was not the case. I had been bounced around from one foster home to another until I finally aged out of the system.
I put myself through a two-year degree at the local community college, and I am hoping that with the money I am making here, I can go back to school and get my BA in forensic science.
The subject changed to just chit-chat after that. I never did mention anything else about Wayne.
Once we were all finished eating, I was helping Dottie clean up the dishes as Ava and Grayson left for work. Then I went to head upstairs to start cleaning. As I got up from the table my phone pings, and it is a text from Wayne, asking me out again for this Friday. I took one more look at Detective Connors on the TV before I replied, “Yes”.
Why I stopped to take another look at the TV to Detective Connors, I don’t really know other than I really liked that man. I got to see him in action a lot during the time he worked Grayson’s case. He always smiled at me and treated me like I was on his level all the time. I got butterflies in my stomach every time he was in the room. I remember once when he touched my arm to ask me something and I had a feeling of an electric current that went through my whole body. I had never felt anything like that ever before. But I am sure that he didn’t feel it or anything for me.
CHAPTERTWO
Blair
This is some serious bullshit. There has to be some kind of evidence that can lead us in a direction as to where to start looking for this creep. These guys have to make a mistake soon, this is the third robbery in two months.
“Detective,” Officer Price said, “This is the owner of the casino, Mark Ramsey. He gave me the security footage after we watched the tape. It looks like the same MO and the same guys based on build and height. They were both wearing black ski masks again. They took approximately $53,000.”
“Thanks Officer Price,” I said. “Mr. Ramsey, describe to me what happened. I know you told Officer Price, and he has written a report, but if you don’t mind, I would prefer to hear it from you than to read it on paper.”
“Sure Detective, no problem. I was in my office in the back, and I heard commotion coming from the floor. I looked on the camera’s and noticed it was coming mainly around the cashier’s desk. I blew up the camera that showed the cashier’s desk specifically. When I did I saw two men, standing in front of the desk with guns. One guy was standing facing the desk and pointing his gun at the cashier and the other one had his back turned to the desk pointing his gun at the people yelling for them all to lay face down on the floor. We keep $50,000 at the desk during peak time. Anyway, as soon as I realized what was happening, I called 911, but they were gone before you guys arrived,” Mr. Price replied.
“Okay, you did all that you could do. I am going to give you this number. Speak to anyone of the partners. It is the Seals and Bounty Security Firm and tell them that I sent you. We will keep in touch with you about the investigation. But if you think of anything else, here is my card as well,” I said as I handed him a business card for Seals and Bounty and one of mine.
“Thank you, but I really can’t afford to hire a security firm full time,” Mr. Price responded sounding a little embarrassed.
“Don’t worry about the cost. They are a great group of former Navy Seals and one former Marine. Explain the situation to them. I am sure that they will be able to work something out for you,” I told him confident that they would. I have worked with them a lot the last few years.
I left the scene and headed home. It was late and I needed a few hours of sleep before I started back on the case tomorrow.
I walked in the door to my quaint three-bedroom two bath home, taking off my shoes as I step inside and called Captain Shepherd to catch him up on the activities of the day. Then I went into the kitchen and grabbed a Hungry Man frozen dinner out of the freezer, popped it into the microwave, grabbed a beer, walked to the couch, and turned on the TV.
After I finished eating, I took a shower and got in the bed to try and get some sleep. To try and not think about the case so that I could sleep, I dreamed about Emma James. I dreamed about her almost every night. Thinking of her brought me peace in a hectic day.
She is beautiful and sexy. I met her on Grayson Clark’s case. I just couldn’t stop thinking about her, even after all these months. There was just something about her that made me feel things that I had never felt before. Things like, maybe, just maybe, I could have it all, a career in law enforcement and love.
CHAPTERTHREE
Emma
Friday rolls around quickly and here I am getting ready for another date with Wayne. He said we were going to dinner at this new Mexican restaurant and then go see the movie, Maverick. I put on a pair of jeans, a blue blouse and a pair of beige four-inch stilettos. I had my hair down with a slight curl to it.
We still hadn’t taken our relationship to the next level yet. I am taking my time. My last boyfriend was a real piece of work. He was controlling and abusive. Wayne seems to be a good guy, but I still have my guard up. I don’t want to make the same mistake twice. I remember when I met John. He was tall, dark, and handsome. He is every girl’s dream guy, at least I thought he was. He took me out, always bought me nice things, seemed like the perfect guy. I feel in love almost immediately with him. It took me to move in with him for him to show his true colors. It was like it gave him a free pass to start controlling my every move and when I didn’t comply, he would hit me. It took a few years for me to get up the courage to leave. I had to leave everything that I knew. My job, my friends, my family. That’s when I moved to Las Vegas to start over. I promised myself that I will never allow that to happen again. It is one reason, well actually the main reason that Wayne has no idea where I live. I never let him pick me up. I always met him at the destination of our dates.
I finished getting ready and head out to meet him at the restaurant. The reservation was made for 7 pm. I left my apartment at 6:40 pm.
