Caroline heard Andrés and the doctor telling her to push one last time, and she put every ounce of strength and willpower she had left into pushing. She fell back, exhausted, onto the pillows when she heard the baby’s loud cry.
“Open your eyes, my love, and welcome our beautiful daughter,” Andrés said.
He laid the baby girl on Caroline’s chest, and when she raised her head to look at their child, she was immediately caught up in a fierce love she never knew existed.
“Andrés, she’s here, and she’s exquisite!” The baby’s blue eyes could be seen through the half-closed eyelids, and tufts of auburn hair peeked out from the blanket.
“She’s perfect, like her mother,” Andrés said. “Seven pounds, eight ounces. Twenty-one inches long, and all her fingers and toes.”
The nurse came to take her to clean her up, which gave Caroline the other moment she had waited for—to kiss her baby’s father and say thank you.
“I’ll take her out and show her off to everybody,” Andrés said when she was returned to them.
“Everybody? Who’s everybody?”
He named them. “And when I last went out to give them a progress report, Gregorio had joined them.”
“How sweet of them all to be here, but Andrés, Luis should be here. Please bring him to meet his sister later today. Please.”
Andrés barely said he promised before Caroline felt lightheaded and fell to sleep.

Caroline had finished breastfeeding the baby and was cooing to her when Andrés came into the hospital room with Luis.
“Luis, come sit with me and meet your sister,” said Caroline, smiling from ear to ear. “I’ve made room for you right here.” She patted a place next to her shoulder.
Andrés lifted Luis onto the bed. “Hola hermanita,” greeted Luis. “Bonjour petite soeur.” He looked up at Caroline. “I said ‘hello baby sister’ in Spanish and French so that she would understand me in both languages.”
“That’s good, son, and you can help teach her as she grows.”
“Her hair is pretty like yours, Caro.”
“Thank you, Luis. Would you like to hold her?”
“I haven’t held a baby before. Will she be okay?”
“She will be all right, and we will help you be comfortable while you hold her.”
Caroline handed the baby to Andrés, and she guided Luis into a closer place to her. “Are you comfortable?”
“Yes. I’m ready, Papa.” Luis held out his arms, smiling confidently.
His father settled his sister into his waiting arms, and Luis was captivated when she opened her eyes and peacefully stared at him.
“She’s so awesome,” Luis whispered. He didn’t take his eyes off her as he announced his only suggestion for her name. “She should be called Anna because Eleanor said it means ‘grace.’”
Caroline looked at Andrés, and he nodded his approval. “We think that suits her nicely, Luis. It’s the perfect name. Thank you for thinking of it.”
“May I hold Anna for a little while, please?” asked Andrés.
“Sure, Papa, but be careful with her.”
“Thank you for reminding me. You do know I’ve held a baby before, right?” He took Anna from Luis.
“Who?”
“You!”
