“Piper is a good person, and I like her a lot,” John said. “What I don’t like are the rumors about why she doesn’t work for you anymore. Piper put me on the track for assistant trainer, spent extra hours training me, and shared everything she knew about horses, and I owe her.
“You should know that I overheard Felix tell his father a week before your horse was disqualified that he guaranteed Sir Valor would win the international championship. I thought it was one more exaggeration he told so as to keep his father off his back, but it makes more sense now.”
“John, would you sign an affidavit stating what you told me for the commission’s investigation?”
“Yes, I’d be glad to do that or testify in person if that’s what the commission requires. I thought that might be a chance of one or the other, so I wrote down all my information for you.”
“Thank you, and here’s my card. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you sought me out, John, and I know Piper will be too. You must be aware, though, that you might lose your job at Bankes Farms over this. If anything happens, I want you to call me, and I’ll make sure that you land on your feet.”
“That’s kind of you, Mr. Olivera, because if I know Felix, I’ll be out on my behind sooner than later. Goodnight, and give my regards to Piper if you see her.”
“I will, and thank you again.”
Andrés stayed seated after John left and laid out all the puzzle pieces to make sense of them. “Felix was probably holding the dossier over Piper’s head to blackmail her into doing his dirty work. My guess is she refused to go along with his plan, and he used someone else, which would set Piper up and have Señor disqualified at the same time. What have I done?” He raked his hands through his hair. “I’ve got to get to her. But before I do, I have some business with Bankes.”
Andrés walked back into the party room and immediately found Felix in the middle of a group of men at the bar, and he moved to stand behind him.
“Bankes.”
Felix was surprised to see Andrés when he turned around.
“I came back to give you my congratulations.” Andrés grinned. “Congratulations, you’re going to prison.”
CHAPTER25
ANDRÉS
Andrés hurried to his rental car and pulled out his phone to make a call.
“It’s after nine here, which makes it after eleven in Uruguay. Rosamund won’t be in bed yet… I hope.”
“Andrés? Is everything all right?” she asked when she answered, her tone worried.
“I think it will be with your help. Please call Gregorio and find out Piper’s destination. Then look up any ranch or farm in Wyoming owned by a family named Ford. If her final destination was somewhere in Wyominganda Ford family lives anywhere near the airport she flew into, please book a flight for me to that airport and text me all the information. I’m headed to my hotel to pack, so if there happens to be a redeye flight, I’ll take it. Oh, and please book a rental car.”
“Are you going to apologize to Piper, beg her to take you back and forgive and forget you didn’t trust her and that you fired her for no reason, and swear you will never doubt her again?”
Andrés could hear the smile in her voice. “That sounds like directions on a roadmap.”
“I suggest you follow them.”
“I intend to do just that, Rosamund.” He chuckled. “Thank you.”
“You and your future contented life are welcome, and you owe me. You will have all the information within thirty minutes.”
It took less than thirty minutes for Andrés to get a string of texts from Rosamund.
