The curtains had been drawn while I was asleep and the bedside lamp cast a soft glow around the room. I closed my eyes and stretched then groaned as the pain made itself known.

“Do you need your pain meds?” An unknown voice said beside me. My head was turning as my eyes snapped open.

I don’t know how I had missed her sitting beside my bed when I first opened my eyes.

Even scarred she was beautiful and very, very pregnant.

I didn’t need an introduction, I knew who she was, Noelle “Face” Knight, wife of Kid Knight, the Vice President of the Iron Dogz MC in Cape Town. But it wasn’t only because of who she was married to that I knew about her. I knew about her because a while back she had been engaged to Dominick Maingarde before she left him for Kid. I still didn’t know what happened there but speculation and rumours abounded about the three of them.

“No thanks, I’ll take them later.”

She stood and started straightening my bed and even helped me sit up in order to fluff my pillows. Her big belly pressed against my upper arm and I gasped when something thumped my arm.

“Your belly kicked me.” I gasped. She laughed and patted my shoulder while helping me to lie down.

“It’s just the baby. She’s always busy around this time.” She gave me a wide smile as she sat down then patted my foot reassuringly.

“It’s a girl?” I asked.

She shrugged as if she didn’t know. Huh?

“I don’t know. Some days it feels like a girl, other days like a boy. We’ll see when this little sweetie decides to make an appearance.”

I was about to ask what she wanted when Kid walked in looking like a thundercloud.

“I thought you were resting before dinner and here I find you fussing over Kellen.” He grumbled.

“I’m not fussing over him. I’m keeping him company.” She said snarkily.

“Angel-eyes, the doc said you need to keep those legs raised and to take it easy. I don’t see either of those things happening.” I could hear the exasperation in his voice.

“I’m pregnant, not sick, and women have been working and having babies since the dawn of time. You and doc are just a couple of worry warts. I’m fine, the baby is fine, so stop worrying.”

She leant forward and patted my foot. “Don’t worry about Mr Growly over there he’s just a teeny tiny bit anxious about the baby arriving too soon.”

I frowned. “Shouldn’t you be listening to the doctor? If he says you need to rest then you really have to. My mother always said if men had to carry the babies we would have been extinct by now.”

Face burst out laughing and Kid gave an amused snort.

“Your mother sounds like my kind of woman.” Face grinned and I shrugged.

I couldn’t tell her my mother wasn’t as brave as all that. I loved her but she hadn’t been strong enough to stand up against my father when I needed her to do so.

“Is Nat having dinner with you tonight?” She frowned at me.

I didn’t know.

“Uhm, I don’t know, I didn’t ask.”

Her eyes narrowed as she looked me over.

“You look tired and I can see by the way you’re holding yourself that you’re in pain.”

Turning to her man she issued orders like a total badass.

“Send the prospect to find Natalie, she was supposed to be here with him not running around the compound and leaving him alone. I want her back here right now.”

Kid didn’t argue, he leant around the door and spoke quietly to the prospect when he came back inside his eyes were on me from where he stood behind his woman.
