“I should come with you,” I tell him, even while I’m reluctant to leave Oscar.
Noah’s here, and he’s perfectly capable of keeping our Omega safe.
Everett frowns at me. “You’ve been through enough tonight.”
He turns to leave, and I rush after him.
He stops and turns mid-way down the stairs.
“Stay here, Cheryl. Oscar needs you.”
Guilt bites at me when he mentions Oscar, but I won’t let him push me back.
“Noah will stay with him. I need to come with you.”
“Need?” he asks, as if he doesn’t get it.
“You’ll need me with you. I can tell.”
I know instinctively. I have a bad feeling about him going out there alone, and it’s more than just worry over a mate who might be walking into trouble.
Gut instinct. Wolves rely on it. I’ve been learning to do the same.
He’s always telling me to trust my instincts.
He lets out a sigh and glances back at Noah. “Watch over Oscar. This shouldn’t take long.”
I glance back as Noah nods.
Everett looks at me, his stare concentrated on my legs. “Put some clothes on.”
I start to open my mouth to complain, but I know if I refuse, he’ll carry me into the bedroom and watch until I do what I’m told. That could wake Oscar, so I compromise. I glamor myself into a pair of jeans and sneakers. It’s about all I can manage now. Fake clothes that’ll vanish once they’ve done their job. Or once my focus snaps, which could be any time now.
Tonight has been draining. I need rest before I can replenish my magic.
“Better?” I ask, waving my arm over my clothed body.
He frowns. “You didn’t put on a bra.”
“Are you kidding me right now?”
Why am I asking? This guy never jokes.
I stare him down and he shakes his head.
“Fine, let’s just make this fast.”
I follow him down the stairs.
He leads us out the back door and motions for me to lead the way through the woods.
“I can’t hear anyone so far,” he tells me as we walk through the yard. “Do you know how many there were? Were they all shifters?”
I take a breath and think back. “I heard two voices, calling back and forth, but it sounded like more. Maybe three, four people. They were all shifters, as far as I could tell by scent.”
I feel myself slowing down when we get closer to where I found the body.
It’s silent in the woods now. I can’t hear any talking. I can’t trace any shifter scent trails that are strong enough to suggest anyone’s still close by.
